Front stock sprocket is 16T. Are any of you using a 17T?

Is the bike fine around town with a 17T

Any suggestions for a good make?

I have one on my GSA no problem. BMW have them as they are standard on the f650/700. Jjh

Yes, drops revs by about 500 for a given speed, and OK at lower speeds

The one from the F650GS fits fine and is one tooth bigger I cant remember the number of teeth but it makes cruising at 70mph a lot more relaxing 1st gear is slightly taller but for road use no issues up to now

I will give it a go. If it works in Central London and drops the motorway revs I think I will be ok.

Many thanks for the responses.

Nice idea, But...

Now may be it's just me but when I put a 17tooth front sprocket on my '08 F8GS it did make a good bike feel that bit nicer, but - the 500 rev drop at touring speeds put the revs right at the point of maximum vibration and my hand went numb in about 25 miles. Not great when starting a two week jaunt to the further reaches of Scotland when you live in Essex. :blast The extra vibes caused problems with my hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder and I was warned by my osteopath that I was risking permanent nerve damage
The other thing is that I was getting 58 mpg on my daily commute into central London and the extra tooth didn't change that. Now while I'm not saying you shouldn't make the change for me I don't see the point; and having been to Berlin and back in September 2014 with a bunch of mates the bike stomped down the French and German motorways at 90+ and didn't feel any busier than my old 1150GS ever did; and still gave me better mpg than both the 1100 Pan Euro & the 900 Trophy.
Sorry if that sounds negative but a nice change in one area can have a number of side effects that aren't so nice.
Bottom line, for me, is that the change caused more problems than it solved; and it wasn't enough better to make it worthwhile spending the dosh to solve them. For less than £20 I swapped back to the 16tooth pinion and all the problems went away.

Worth noting. It's not happening on mine. I've about 5,000 miles on mine since. I wonder if it's a problem on the f650/700? Maby the sprocket change highlighted another underlying problem? Jjh

same here as Jjh, done 34,000 with 17t sprocket and no adverse effects

I changed mine mainly to lower revs when on fast road work. No problems even when off road, you soon get used to it. Give it a try, it's only risking £20.

I find that my 650 is geared very tall as standard, about the same as my 1200! 650 is 17/41 and the 800 is 16/42. Have thought of going for the 16T on the front with the standard 41T on the rear. Anyone done this? Apologies for the thread hijack!

I went for the 16 tooth on my 650gs and it makes it much more tractable at low speeds in town, not noticed any loss in mpg really.

Andy.
