Tested a used one today. Liked it. Only has two modes, Rain and Road. Anybody know (for certain) whether you can or can't retrofit/activate Dynamic mode?

Salesman thinks no. Google AI thinks yes.

you can do anything ...with enough money .

it might be in the ECU already and needs activating
it might just want the switchgear with the correct buttons on it
it might need an ECU .
it might be a case of moving wires around
does dynamic do JUST the maps ? or does it fuck about with the suspension as well ?

AI , can say what it wants , it ain't gonna be doing it.

yer gonna need someone who can look inside electronically ,
and that is probably someone who works in a place that has a padded bench, for you to bend over on . ( take Vaseline or butter with you ) .

Buy a model with all the modes, my previous XR TE had all the bells and whistles. There are plenty out there to choose from.

When I bought my 2018 R1200GSA (an up specced Basic that was in reality a TE without ESA ) it turned up minus Sat nav prep and a number of programmes on the TFT side of things ,Computer Assist Pro etc .

BMW UK wanted me to just do a straight swap for a TE the dealer had in stock as they said the programmes could not be installed but I declined.

BMW factory did a software update and it was uploaded onto the bike at the dealer .

Point is anything is possible BUT it may very well be very expensive if you have to pay for it

Question.
Did you go into the settings menu and check that it didn’t actually have them in there but just not ticked to be displayed on the screen and thus available?
If they are not ticked then the button doesn’t give them as an available option to used.

Funnily enough I was thinking why would they offer rain and road but not dynamic and I think you have answered that question I hope the OP comes back and tells us it worked or not :)

No, the point is that not everything is possible, hence the question…
No the point I was making is the dealer said it was not possible, BMW UK said it was not possible hence the offer of a new TE, BMW Germany said it was possible. Other than physical components not being present ie certain sensors or esa suspension units 90% of functions are there just not activated in the ECU software present on that particular bike.
Same as all new BMW cars have heated steering wheels fitted from new BUT it is only activated by dealers after paying a subscription for the functions activation and a yearly fee trom then onwards

Short answer = Hmmmm, I've just had a look at the retro fit options , and dynamic pro isn't in there

however there is a big chunk of option codes that can be retrofitted

as you didn't give a model year it may or may not be applicable ;)
If you have E-Sys and know what the factory code for things are then it’s very easy to tell the BCM that it does in fact have the required option fitted

I understand the business model at play, but learning things like that does not make us, the customers, feel great, does it?

I remember a few years ago, there were 3 Golf diesels available with the same cc motor, but different power levels and therefore prices. The only difference was the programme on the chip.

I have a lot of fun reading about folks who have simply chipped their turbo-diesels to get more power. I have a "high-power" turbo-diesel Audi and the differences to get the extra power reliably are:-
1. Redesigned pistons with a lower compression ratio and the cooling port moved closer to the first piston ring groove. Increased oil spray to the underside of the piston.
2. A second coolant chamber in the cylinder head.
3. Uprated oil and water pumps.
4. Different pattern of fuel injector needle.
5. Altered injector timings when performing a DPF regeneration.

I wonder how many tuning companies are equipped to do this.
