Can anybody help me, the son of a friend has crashed his R1 and needs a fairing repair. The damage is not too bad should be able to fix it without the need for a new fairing at £600 plus. He is in the Gatley area (South Manchester). Being young he would prefer cheap.

Depends on what you / he means by help and cheap?

Help: I guess it depends on what the damage is as to how difficult (and successful) the effort is. A broken lug or crack is probably much easier to mend than a smashed hole.

There are lots of websites giving some pretty good guides on how to DIY, including some very good film clips.

http://www.google.co.uk/search?clie...oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&ei=Y_vmTqneEMLb8APqxtGPCg

Past issues of bike magazines have carried extensive articles on how to do it, Ride for example. A quick call to their publishers may turn up a re-print or a photocopy of the relevant pages for a few quid.

Cheap: Little cheaper than DIY but really expensive if it doesn't work. His local dealers may well be able to point him in the direction of the bods they use. Or, once again, try a local Google search, then call around to get some quotes.

I think it's like a lot of things, the more time he takes on the DIY the better the final result. I assume the bike is rideable without the fairing? If so, he is not stuck for transport in the short term.

Why not do it himself, i've now done loads of plastic reapirs with ABS filler rods and a 25/40W soldering iron, can't get much cheaper than that, whoever does it, it will still need to be sprayed?

Plastic welding is quite a skill, Welwyn tool co sell Leister plastic welding eqiuipment, it is very important that the fairing is welded with a rod of the same type of plastic. Fairings usually have an identification stamp on the back somewhere. Google plastic welding for your location someone will be doing it not too far away.

You did say Cheap!

get a jam jar, put a teaspoon or 2 of acetone (nail varnish remover) in it, then drop a lego block (of the correct colour of course!) into the acetone.

when the lego block is melted, use the goop to make your repair and leave it to dry overnight in a warm place.
