Jeez! You wanna get that off as soon as....then a good coating of your favourite corrosion inhibitor.

Don't know if it's true but I was told never to use hot water to remove road salt, apparently it re-activates it or speeds up the corrosion or something??? Anyone know anything about that?

Mick

Jeebus!

Your poor bike looks like it's had a night parked at the low-tide mark....:tears

I've never seen salt like that on a bike....:(

If I wasn't pished I'd drive over and give you a hand to wash her/him..

:comfort

Yup, I was told that too, the reason being hot water will disolve the salt & will be carried into every nook & cranny the water goes into.

Cold water every time! :thumb2

What does the BMW advert say "An exceptionally versatile performer both on and off-road, with the power to take you anywhere you want to go; and the looks to turn the head of anyone who sees it." Providing of course you don't ride during the winter when the roads are gritted when I'm sure the sight of corrosion will certainly turn many heads.

Wash in cold water only in these conditions I'm afraid however tempting it is to use hot to keep your hands warm. Warm the engine when dry after a wash then spray with Scottoiler, WD40 or similar products until the vapours rearch every knook and cranny then switch off and allow to settle.

On advice I also sprayed copious amounts of engine laquer all over the front and heads as soon as it started to freeze which I'm hoping will keep the corrosion at bay until the summer :augie - so far so good.

One other thing to note during this weather: You might wonder why when the roads have been gritted they still look wet and are still slippery. Apparently, so I have been told, molasses are mixed into the grit/salt to get it to stick to the road more and not get blown away as the roads dry thereby reducing the amount of road salt used (and cost). A bit like substituting the ice with a banana skin.

That is exactly why my bike is stuck in my garage :thumb2 My bicycle is rather salt encrusted though :(

treat your bike with ACF-50 and its completely protected for the whole winter - no need to mess about with rinsing it off or any of that palaver.

One treatment in November will last all the way through to April - or the following november if you cant be arsed washing the stuff off.

can't believe that people mess around with this kind of rigmarole.
