Hey Folks I know it's a bikey place but It's also a cracking forum where a lot of ideas and Queries get answered and aprt from anything I hope to raise awareness for what they are about to do! Maybe action from our accumulated apothetic personages may save the poor feathered feckers! The Kids in the area haven't really got anything else to look forward to except a run out to the park to feed the oul birds! Or a run to Ikea! LOL

I am feckin outraged between somebodies Wonderful idea to change the name of Belfast City Airport to that of an Alcholic Ex Footballer who did himself real harm, instead of people like Joey or Robert who were ambassadors for our country!

Now they plan to cull the geese in case there's an emergency!

Personally I'd rather see the airport shut than the geese culled!

Life is precious! Too precious to waste like that! Really didn't lik ethe prickin the eggs with an oily needle Fer Feck Sake what is that all about???

So anyone ever heard of a bird strike or a plane brought down by big fat overfed feathered feckers?

LINKY to news item on Plans to Cull the Geese at Victoria Park Belfast!

17th Nov 1980, Nimrod from Kinloss crashed having hit several birds on T/O. The birdstrike took out 3 of the 4 engines, 2 pilots killed. Birdstrikes are not unusual, but severe one enough to bring down a multi-engine aircraft is.

Shame they can't move the birds so they settle somewhere else, but I suspect they would just go back to the original site.

Yep but here we are talkin of big fat birds which rarely go anywhere except from the islands to the shore and certainly do not have the need to fly far for food

If i remember correctly Kinloss is plagued with flocks of seagulls ??

Plus they are supposed to test the jets by firing frozen chicken into them

There's a video somewhere of this

WTF does George Best have to do with birds being culled? I take it you think you're the only person that knows that he was an alcoholic? As far as I know, it's quite common knowledge. I would imagine that the committe who decided to name Belfast airport after him probably knew or at least supected that he had a drink problem during his life.

Why don't you write to them just in case they haven't heard? They might rename the place thanks to your investigative work :thumb

Alan Young of air traffic services at the airport said while a licence had been applied for, the cull "has not been deemed necessary".
Am I reading this wrong Jaythro, or is it the application for the cull that you're against.
Because they're saying in the link you posted that there would be NO cull. :nenau

My seven year old grandson could probably think of a better worded and more intelligent reply. :)

Good luck with your quest re the airport :thumb2

They could then re-name it the Steven Cull Airport :augie

Yes, you're right about Kinloss and the gulls, but it is also on the migration route for geese.

I'm no expert on civilian airliners and their engines, but even though they tested Tornado engines and airframe with frozen chickens, I have ended up in the past covered in bird remains that have found their way into the cockpit, and also have had quite extensive engine damage caused by birds - in fact it isn't that long ago that a Tornado was lost because both engines were wrecked by a multiple birdstrike.

I suspect the residents near the City airport would prefer a cull than an aircraft landing on them. Having only flown into Aldergrove a few times I don't know if that suffers the same bird problem as Belfast City, but of course you don't then have the convenience that people want of an airport near the city centre.

BTW, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that a cull should definitely take place.

No worries Stimulator Yep what pisses me off is that the aircraft have to make an approach parallel to the shoreline and pass over hundreds and hundreds of seagulls and other shoreline birds So are they next?

Yep Blobbs But Belfast city airport does not only support Belfast it has a catchment area of most of the North

George Spent more time living away from Belfast than he did in it

The Dunlops did their racing and their Charity runs and remained here doing what normal family folks did!

After all, I bet even you aren't perfect...................................................:hide:D

I think that's a bit unfair Ronno, at the very least it was to the point, though I do accept it was somewhat unimaginative:)

After reading in the Southampton Echo of Liverpool's act of renaming its airport as "Liverpool John Lennon Airport", - my brother-in-law decided to write a letter to the paper, asking if the citizens of Southampton didn't deserve a similar act - and to rename the airport as "Southampton Benny Hill Airport".

He suggested that a bronze statue at the entrance, with the legend: "He drove the fastest milkcart in the west" at the foot.

They published his letter! :blast

What's wrong with "Belfast Ian Paisley Airport"? :nenau That's got a nice ring to it............................ :augie

I used to live 5 miles from Heathrow which has big problems with Canada Geese

They never sought to cull them from what I recollect but they certainly spent a fair bit of time trying to re-home them by making a new habitat more appealing than the one they wanted to live in

Culling would be a bit like trying to paint the Forth Road Bridge, besides the RSPB would go ballistic for sure, there'd be old women chaining themselves to land rovers and the government has enough problems on its hands....

I definitely favour a more gentle approach to managing the problem

I think it just becomes a feature of airport life after that - actively managing the problem, sending the bird scarers out.....there's a few munters on this place that could apply for the job if vacancies open up....:augie

They could then re-name it the Steven Cull Airport :augie
Holy Jasus Trev.................that has to be the best comeback to a post ever................Class.............:bounce1
