Well, have got me routes planned for the forthcoming trip, all the way across to neckersulm, where we meet some fellow bikers and head orf dahn sarf towards austria.swiss and lich and back!

Except, in previous years, we always seem to end up following the lake road around the dreaded( by me, anyway) Lake bodensee, where we get stuck in traffic and endless little hamlets where progress seems very slow!
( prejudiced by the torrential rain we endured here last time as well, no doubt!)

so, I seem to recall reading a thread on here last year I think where some kind person suggested an alternate route parallel to the lake but scenic and away from heavy traffic...many searches have failed to re find it tho:blast
(wish i had saved it now:blast)
anyone recall this and can point me at it so I can use it to build my route to bregenz and beyond would be a star

Arm yourself with a reasonable map and between you and your chums you'll have it cracked in no time :thumb2

Failing that, here are the search results for Bodensee. Happy hunting. http://www.ukgser.com/forums/search.php?searchid=6891172

yes, thanks....well aware i can use a map but was hoping someone could point me at the the route I recalled seeing, your link returns a page stating "no matches" ,which was a nice touch

That is very odd.

Anyway, a search under Bodensee turns a lot up, take your pick as you may well recognise what you are looking for ahead of us.

You could also have a gander at the 80 Virees a moto routes, which may well show alternatives. There is also a large file with lots of Alpine routes and, of course, the old favourite of the ADAC maps, perhaps?

The problem comes in that 'neckersulm' turns up no returns on a map, so quite where you are going beyond:

and which way you might want to go around the very large lake is a complete mystery.

A very quick look at the lake shows the traditional 'around the shore' road, with what are close on parallel rings of lesser (or some major) roads going back in all directions into the hinterland. It would be easy enough to pick one that may suit you.

Alternatively, if you could be a bit more exact on where you are heading from and where you want to go to after the lake, I am sure someone will complete your plans for you.

yep always good to get someone else to do all the work....;)

but then its only a couple hundred miles or so out of a 3500mile trip

however, all I really wanted was the route which IIRC someone posted as an alternate way to avoid the horrible road along the lakeside... I recall they commented that it was an excellent alternative, but it seems I must have imagined this post... as despite searching extensively I have been unable to locate, it may have been a reply to a post on a totally unconnected topic so i asked the question in the hope that maybe someone even the original poster or one of the many on here who try to help had read it and could point me at the item.

its no problem to make a route, after all, anyone can copy over off maps or even whatever book/publiction you like..... for this section as with all the others for the trip, but its nice to see what others have done, you never know their route might be better for scenery or roads or both

I will connect up the dots both before and after...

by the way I have had a look at all the routes you have posted, a few in detail and very good they look too....a lot of work for you all the posiitve responses must be very heart warming

Then it seems like you will be a first to find a route to avoid the dreaded lake. Post it up when you have finished, please. :beerjug:

But you still haven't told us where you are coming from and hoping to go to. If you tell us the nearest that you want to get to Bodensee and your destination maybe someone can suggest something to get you around it. And yes I know that Bodensee is murder in the Peak season or German holidays that's why I personally do the lakeside route at night if I must do it at all.

yes see your point, but all i was looking for is the route that someone attached to a post....so i can see if how it can be adapted to my existing route.

as I have not been able to locate this route and post, maybe I just dreamt it:)

Well in that case I can only wish you continued pleasant dreams. Living not too far away from Bodensee and knowing the area very well I could have perhaps offered you some alternative routes passing through some chocolate box lid German villages that most tourists never get to see. However, as you appear to be reluctant to provide even some basic info we'll let that idea pass and I'll finish by wishing you a pleasant trip......whatever route you end up taking.

I for one would be interested to see your suggested routes.

Ping them up, please.

Thank you.
