Fill the Shock Preload Adjuster

Never heard of having to top up the pre-load adjuster. If you feel the need do what the link says and use any oil. In the link they are using a 5/30 oil.

Hi, tried the link http://members.cox.net/slartidbartfa.../shock-oil.htm but it doesn't seem to work. Have removed my R1200GS (2010) rear shock off the bike and keen to top up the preload oil (first 8 clicks of adjustment are currently ineffective). Do I need to compress the spring to remove all pressure before I remove the oil filler screw, or will winding out the preload adjuster to minimum be enough? If I can remove the filler screw without compressing the spring do I also need to do anything else before topping up the oil? I'm assuming that I need to lay the shock on its side with the filler hole uppermost.

Thought it was 1150 that had hydraulic preload adjuster?
My my 2010 GSA has the preload adjuster at the top of the shock and would appear to be a worm gear that turns an adjusting ring??

Check the spring sag with no load on the bike. If the spring has compressed (shortened) the bike will sit low and the adjuster will have to be wound up to raise the bike to the correct height.
