On the final drive, how do you go about checking it to see if all is well!!!
How much oil....what oil.....does the drive "use" oil, and if so at what rate.
Is it working right, if not what will be a tell tell signs!!!
Me(and others) aint no tech heads, so plain english would be good

Oil specs and quantity are in the manual.......though you don`t say what bike you`re asking about.

Most shaft drive bikes are fine with EP80/90 GL-5 gear oil in the shaft/bevel and gearbox.

If unsure of the recommended quantity (say,on a rare bike with no info) the usual amount of gear oil to use is when it is just level with the filler hole if this filler hole is side mounted.
If there is a top filler hole, then there would be a smaller level check hole at about half way up ... open this check hole and oil should weep out if the correct amount of oil is in.

Final drive oil shouldn`t be 'used up' as such, though a very small amount may be lost via the breather from time to time in mist form.

Change the oil at the very least once a year in average use .... or,seeing as it`s so cheap,do it every engine oil change.

There are checks to make for excessive backlash and bearing play (do a Forum Search or two),but as long as nothing feels 'odd' while you rotate the wheel or are riding, and there`s no grumbling, grinding, whining or screeching, don`t worry about it.

Tarka, mate, seems like you're taking the piss on something serious here!

(In-joke, well for me anyway)
