Firefox will not connect to the internet

Evenin' all.

The situation is:a laptop running Vista with AVG free and Windows Firewall. The AVG refuses to update but that's another story.

Firefox has been installed and working for some time until yesterday when any attempt to launch it get's the message: Page Load Error - failed to connect - the connection was refused.

IE works fine, email works fine, Firefox is definitely on the firewall "allowed" list, I've tried the suggestion on the Firefox site.

Any ideas......please..........for my sanity?

Seriously, life's too short to mess around with Vista. Either run XP or OS X.

This post doesn't help you solve your problem, but as Vista's your problem it might be time to look at O/S alternatives

Not a particularly secure solution, but I've done this in the past succesfully.....

Disable the windows firewall, try Firefox using the URL of a trusted site (google.com is as good as any and fast with loads of bandwidth) and see if it connects...then re-instate the firewall while it's still connected.

You'll often find that from there on it'll work- don't ask me why though

I've also had this happen before. I found a system restore did the trick.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try the two free ones but the "premium" Mac suggestion might need to wait until the credit crunch has subsided a little...
