I'm almost convinced to chop in the F650 for a 1100 GS (it's all I can afford).

The one major problem is getting the bike down the side of the house!

When I bought the 650 I got some smaller bar ends made, removed an external chimney-breast and I can now get the bike in and out pretty easily.

What's the narrowest you can make a GS by shortenning bars, moving mirrors etc.

Target width is around 825mm. Is the engine wider than that?

I can (almost) convince SWAMBO that the bike is a good move but I got so much stick after modifying the house last time that I don't think I could get away with moving the outside wall (or moving house) to get the GS in.

Tell me it can be done... Please.

Talk to Pint6x - he has some similar kind of problem to you, narrow access. He will give you more details.

By the way to answer the question, if you do any chopping, do it in the middle and then araldite or weld the bars back together. With a bar inside to keep it solid. I would be quite happy with an inch off of each side of mine but I've got used to it after three years and I don't have a backpassage problem. (at least not since the operation):D

If your after 2 inches per side that sounds a lot... Anyway good luck and make sure you cut out the middle... Wires and things dictate this...

you obviously don't mind a little bit of house modification, may i suggest digging under the house, a type of basement, its easier getting it into a hole than a back passage. just a thought. ;)

Thanks Steptoe - why don't they build houses with basements anymore? Perhaps a ramp OVER the house - this would test the off road skills on a daily basis.

Richie - is there a lot of wiring going down the inside? I'm not sure I'd trust my welding (or araldite). I've got some narrow renthal MX bars which I tried on the F650 but couldn't fit all the controls on to - I suppose the GS is worse for bar end real estate.
