Hi,
I just fitted a set of H+B crash bars, complete with crash course in German. I agree the instructionsare almost entirely uselass, more like an Ikea assembly sketch...
This is roiughly how it went:
Remove the side panels from both sides to get better access, and try a dry run with assembling the side bars in the central support so you can sort out any snags before you fit the bars.
First step is to find the two grub screws in the bag of parts and put a drop of thread lock ( blue Loctite ) on them and insert by one to turns into the threaded holes on the central support section. I left mine til last, and do not recommend that unless you enjoy frustration ...
Now towards the front of the left hand side of the engine, above and to the front of the cylinder, you will notice the oil line fromn the base of the engine is clamped to a black bracket on the frame. Remove the screw with the right Torx bit ( sorry I forget which one it is ), and locate the two screws in eth bag of bits that will fit the thread. Apply thread lock to both screws, and mount the center section of teh bars to the frame using this screw hole, and the threaded hole in the same position on the other side of the bike. Use washers on the screws, and the small spacer on the left side, between the bracket and the oil line clamp. Do not tighten the screws fully yet.
Now decide which side to work on next, choice is yours.
Remove the Torx55 screw that is fixing the lower frame section to the engine block below the throttle body. Notice that there is a threaded hole about 4 inches in front of that with no screw in it. This hole and the one you have just removed that bilt from are used for fixing side section of the bars. In you bag of bits there are fours large spacers. Two are teh same length one a bit longer and teh other even longer. The two sapcers are to be used for the rear fixing bolts of the bars, one on each side, fitting into the large aperture of the frame mounting ( natch). CHECK YOUR DIAGRAM, I beleive the longest spacer is for the front ficing bolt on the left, but it could be the right.
Now it gets a bit fiddly requiring more hands and fingers than you have to feel secure. Find the right bolts for the two holes, one is thicker than the other and goes to the rear. Your diagram will identify whether you want thel onger or shorter of the slightly smaller bolts for the side you are working on. Put the washers and thread lock on the bolts, and place them through the mounting holes. Put the spacer on to the bolts, short one on the rear bolt. Offer the bar up to the bike and insert the open end into the end of the centre section, and line the bolts up with the their threaded holes, and tighten the bolts to hand tight. Now repeat on the other side. Check that the bars look straight and that the top part of teh side sections are fully inserted into the centre section. Tight the two bolts that are holding the centre section to around 14 ft-lbs, then tighten the bolts for the side sections to 20 ft-lbs. Finally tighten the two grub screws to held the side bars into the centre section.
All you need to do now should be to replace the side panels and put that German English dictionary on E-Bay.
Good Luck
