My old (maybe 5+ years old) budget X series ASUS i3 laptop has died- not the HD as whipped it out and is OK. Not the first HD that I've replaced in it... plus a new screen too. And the battery is goosed.

The wifi gave up the ghost a few days ago and now it won't power up at all. It has had a rough life physically and I am assuming that the motherboard has failed.:blast

Bin or save? Be brutal. I only use it for word processing, storing photos etc and the web. Plus the kids (teens) use it for homework...

I like the 15" size, and have been looking at reviews but tbh like with bikes, I don't always trust reviews, preferring personal recommendations. Most web-reviews slag off budget laptops as having poor screens. Is that correct? I've never really noticed how crap mine was, but I do on some other machines.
Refurbished? Second hand? Who to trust, seems like a minefield.

Bin it & get a new one.
The rest depends entirely on your budget.

You’ll not go very wrong with Dell.
Not the cheapest but I’ve never had a hardware issue with any of the many Dell machines I’ve had.
If you’re happy keeping your photo’s and large documents on an external drive, then pay the extra and get an SSD.
The difference in speed is just amazing.

Bin it. It’s had its day at that age

Refurbished on eBay or you can get a perfectly good new one for basic use for 250. It’ll do what you need it to.

Pm me if you want recommendations.

I’d recommend an external hard drive to put your pics on too.

Think of it as a large dongle.

Easy back up and easy transfer

You can't beat a big dongle!

I put a SSD in the old Asus- very quick. That's the bit that still works.

Dell seem pretty solidly built.

Thanks gents, needed the permission to say to my domestic manager that it needed binned (she said- didn't you just buy that? Yep, 6 years ago:rolleyes:)
:beerjug:

Bin 100 percent.

I’d recommend getting a box of chocolates at same time.

Win win

Before you bin it check whether you can put the HD in a caddy thus getting extra storage.

Check out Dell's own refurb site as there are some good deals to be had on there. https://www.dellrefurbished.co.uk/laptops

I replaced a good quality Sony Vaio with a Dell 17 3000 fitted with a SSD for Windows and programs and a big HDD for data. The Sony would take an age to boot having had so many Windows 7 upgrades and patches. The new Dell boots in a few seconds :thumb2

I like that idea.
