Flaky Paint on Fork Yoke and Fork Lowers

Can anybody recommend paint thats a close match for the Fork lowers and yoke. The paint on mine is bubbling up and chipping something chronic. The bike is a 1999 so I guess painting themselves is the only realistic option I have to tidy it up.So much for BMW quality............
 
Have a chat with your dealer - bubbling paint on the fork brace has been a recognised fault (a bad batch of fork braces?). Several of the folks on the BB have had theirs re-painted - including, from memory, at least one out of warranty.

I think you'll find Hammerite plain silver is a pretty good match (although, if you're re-finishing both the fork legs & brace, it doesn't have to match with anything, does it?).

There must have been a factory full of "bad batch" parts
From 1999 ? they fitted them to my 02 GS:(

I am awaiting a result from BMW regarding my shorted out battery lead.

I'll bring up the fork yoke when I talk to them.

Then again, I have been fancying painting the front wishbone and fork clamp black for a while......
 
My GS has just turned 3 years old

The paint on the yoke has just started to bubble up

The bike is booked in for a service at Rydale, Cardiff on Wednesday. I will ask them if BMW will fork out for a replacement.
 
Flaky Paint

Just aquired a 2001 GS and had the same problem, but spayed the yolk and fork legs matt black. Looks great!
 
Malcolm, How difficult was it to get the Fork legs and yplk off the bike to spray them.
 
Don't take them off! Remove wheel, brake callipers, ABS sensor and mudguard and the two chrome brackets that secure the brake hoses and ABS cable (Allen key bolt - can be seized up)

Rub down the yolk and bottom of the fork leg with wire wool or similar.

Mask off fork legs and part of the suspension wishbone and away you go.
 
My "y" reg is doing the same. I spoke to SPC last week and got "they all do that, sir" response. Admittedly looking around many others were the same. I have a can of BMW spray paint on order which is exactly the same. I'll give you the part number once received.

I'd like to know how people have got the repair outside warranty though - I'd fancy having a go myself.
 
Just found this thread after doing some work on the yolk at the weekend.

Brake calipers off, front wheel off, mudguard off then attacked the flaky stuff with a scraper and a wood chisel!

Dabed a bit of hammerite silver on the affected parts then re-assembled it with loads of waxoil and coppaslip on the bolts.

The fork lowers were treated to a pair of Ohlins stickers to cover the stone chips!!
 
hi had mine changed out of warranty [6months] part was free but had to pay half the labour £40 seemed fair to me,good luck give it a try nowt to lose:thumb
 
My fork yoke started bubbling-up & flacking off at start of this year - it's a Sept.'01 bike. I contacted supplying dealer ( John Clark, Tayside ) who took photo's etc. but although BMW agreed to replace defective part I would have to pay full labour - about £110 !!. Since the new one would probably end up as bad after a year or so, I decided just to re-paint it. I'm not convinced with this "bad batch" theory - as someone else said it's a hell of a big "bad batch".

My bike is also a Sept '01 and I had both the fork bit and both wheels replaced out of warranty in March. That was through John Clark in Aberdeen with no probs at all.
 
Have had a conversation with the guys at Hughenden about this. The reason that the fork brace/ bridge corrodes is that the machining of the holes for the bolts etc takes place after the finish has been put on the part. This means that salt/crap gets under the laquer and it starts to flake away. Doh! Nice one Beemer.

The solution is to use a wax protective coat on the offending area from new and stop any shite getting in there. Beemer do a good product - enginewax - which is well cheap for a change and was designed to seal araes on the engine bays of the cars. I als does a fabulous job of protecting your alloy rims during the winter.
