Flat screen

First off, this has nothing to do with onarism ok.

After looking at my monitor for a short while my eyes just seem to give up which has the advantage in that it prevents me from reading all this bollox here.

But would a flat sreen be much clearer with no flickering etc.
I'm also moving house and a smaller monitor would be great.
So what's the score with flat screen monitors, good, expensive, what/where to buy.

Gezza my guys look after four hundred + PC users they are all screaming for flat screens, but once they have them a while I have found they are quite happy to loose them in favour off good old CRT's its IMHO too, theres some costly good ones out there but the run of the mill ones are a step backwards in quality.

If your having problems do get your eyes checked out I didn't and was amazzed when I did how much diff a pair of close work specs have made to Computing and Reading (still cant spell but I can see wot I'm not spelling right / did f all for my english to).

not got a TFT screen but i do know they don't flicker. neither does a decent CRT (detectably, by eye) if the refresh rate is set above about 75Hz. 85Hz> is even better if your monitor/graphics card will stand it.

what is the refresh rate on your pc?

just in case you don't know where it's set, it's in: right click desktop/properties/settings/advanced/monitor

i'd say a really good monitor is a good investment for anyone who uses a pc much.

got a 19" mitsubishi diamond pro 900u (obsolete) CRT myself. box is a bit on the large side but picture is the nuts.

i also have a cheaper 19" iiyama curved screen, reasonable quality, CRT on another pc. wouldn't want to use that one for long. big difference.

Cheers guys, I should really wear reading glasses these days but normallty don't. Perhaps a visit to the optician rather than wasting money on a different screen is the answear.

It's always worth getting your eye properly checked, but if all you need glasses for is reading or CRT work, try Boots for their cheap "Reading Glasses".

As long as no-one sees you, you can get a pair with the necessary magnification for under a fiver.

Flat Screen with do nothing for your eyes.

Unless you spend a lot of money an equivalent size CRT will provide more substantial performance.

TFT's tend not to have the same capabilities as CRTs so you may encounter degredation where refresh rate is important. This generally shows up in games and videos. You will find that there is a tendancy to smudge and there is a bit of lag. Also the color may degrade.

TFTs also have a lower life expectation that CRTs.

I purchased an iiyama 18inch screen which is great but set me back around a grand. My kids had a cheaper 15inch from PC world and have now reverted to a five year old Sony 15inch CRT as the definition is much greater and it is better at supporting their games.

If eyesight is your issue then you need to get your eyes checked. If you use a PC at work your company is required under Health and Safety to pay for any eyesight checks (cannot remember what the period is).

Personally I have switched to varifocal as I was discarding my glasses whenever I used my PC or laptop and needed to also read documents or look at the keyboard. The switching between laptop & desktop also caused problems.

I did not go for laser eye thingy as I was advised, beside the risk, I would have difficulty as the surgery cannot provide me with a variable focus lens.
