FM Radio on 1200GS

I currently have a small pocket size radio that I carry in my jacket pocket and use Sennheiser inner ear buds.

The radio works alright in London as I can leave the volume and channel fixed.

The radio has started going to mono so it is time for a replacement.

I want to listen to the radio (not recorded music) and I would like to change the channel and volume without having to dig in my pocket.

Is there a dedicated bike radio that can be mounted?

Some mobile phones (e.g. SonyEricsson K800i) have a built in FM RDS radio. This works sort-of OK (i.e. retunes to the strongest station) but the aerial is the headphone lead so not as good as a "proper" aerial.

Yep got a Nokia N91, although a little on the bulky side compared to most new mobiles it has a radio, 4gb (new has 8gb) mp3 player and wired remote control, plus all the other stuff like bluetooth etc etc

I tried to get a radio for my bike (like you get in a car), they only seem to exist for bikes like the Pan and LT, I even emailed a couple of well known manufacturers with no response. I use a mobile phone now but the reception can be crap when moving.

I did see a thread somewhere about someone mounting a car stereo in the topbox. the unit had a jack for earphones etc and an IR remote control, they extended the IR LED with some wire and secured it above the unit, then mounted the remote in an otterbox to the handlebars, tracing a lead alongside the IR wire for the earphones finished the job off nicely. Not a bad idea but my box is always full!

FM Radio on GS

Many moons ago when I had a 1100RT I fitted a radio cassette in the lockable cubby hole in the fairing . I used a Sony unit which came with a cable joystick type remote, it had an external aerial & was fed into the autocom. It worked really well and was a much cheaper alternative than the BMW optional radio.

I reckon that type of radio would give good results on a GS but would need to be mounted in the topbox , which I suppose would need to have a few holes drilled in it for cabling. I think you would need to be a serious radio listener to have this type of installation on a GS.

I bought the radio remote for my new iPod Nano... it does work, though it is quite a bit weaker at receiving (both with headphones, and my autocom stereo lead) than my vehicle radios... I did use it a bit on my recent visit to the UK though... nice to have a break to my own music once in a while...
