Foot braking jammed this morning

The foot brake on my '05 standard GS jammed in the braking position when I was pulling away from a set of traffic lights on my way to work this morning.

Managed to get it dragged off to the side of the road, without any incidents (thankfully). Pulling up the brake lever seemed to sort it, took it fairly handy the last 200 metres to the office car park.

I took a better look in the carpark and the back disc was very hot, I couldn't tell if there was a lot of wear on the brake pads.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is it worth bringing it around to a garage for a quick check? Or just write it off to a freak occurrence?

Last service was 2k ago.

Thanks Geoff.

I'll give the garage a call today and see what they think. I shall be using the back brake sparingly until then :o

Yes I think it's a common fault and as Lolgeoff says, it's probably the master cyclinder.

I had a 650 Dakar which did this, it melted the pistons in the Caliper and wrecked the disc

Amongst the spares I've aquired for my 650 Rallye bike is one rear disc which has overheated and I guess the master cyclinder was the cause.

This problem also occurs on 1150s although as yet, no one has attributed it to the master cyclinder since the problem just seems to go away.

Replace the master cylinder. It'll happen again and again otherwise. It might be alright for months and then suddenly you'll be riding along thinking the bikes not pulling very well and then find the rear caliper smoking.

My rear M/cyclinder went at 16k and there was still a little meat left on the pads....Fancy the pads lasting longer than the M/cylinder.

Ended up that there was nothing wrong, went to the BMW garage and they took the brake apart, check the M/cylinder and tightened everything up, spent a good 45 minutes trying to replicate the problem but no joy.

Best of all there was no charge :thumb2
