Forgotten password

A friend has an old pc running Windows XP.

He has forgotten the password and now needs to get back into it to retrieve a document.

Any ideas as to how he might do it?

There are many free progs to use that will let someone recover an XP admin password......it will involve making a boot floppy or CD.

Try rebooting into safe mode first though.......you should be able to log in as as the administrator account and reset the password, or maybe the file will be accessible from safe mode itself

try logging in as a guest, some people set up passwords but don't hide all the files

Failing all that, re-installing XP will do the job.....I can't remember if just a repair from the console will reset the admin password but if it doesn't, re-install but don't reformat, then in theory, all the files on the drive should be accessible....just make sure 'your friend' sets a null password or one 'he' can remember next time
