Fork Oil Drain Bolt Buggeration

Afternoon all,
Last night I decided it would be a good time to change the fork oil in my 02 GS since I didn't know if it had ever been done. I had to replace a fork seal anyway.

So, I replaced the seal on the left fork and drained the oil. Manky, greeney brown it was too. Almost sludgey.

I then tried to undo the drain bolt on the right fork. I thought the one on the left was tight but the one on the right snapped my allen key. It's snapped flush with the top of the bolt too.

So, any tips on how to get this bolt out? Will I be forever more removing the folk leg from the yolk to pour out the oil?


The other annoying thing is that the leaky fork seal still leaks. Maybe it's not seated correctly so I'll whip it out later and try again.

I reckon the easiest solution is to pull the fork leg off and invert it, the fork oil only needs very occasional changing as it does not do a lot.

I did the same thing on another bike years ago, I just left it in and got the old oil out with a large syringe and a length of plastic pipe.

I wouldn't have thought you need to change the fork oil unless you have stripped the forks completely,it doesn't do any damping thats taken care of by the front shock. Afaik it's only there for lubrication of the spring etc.
 
A pointless exercise it's only there to lube the spring and srop it going rusty.
 
What Oil?

Having read the post I am not in a position to offer any advice....sorry.

But, I would be interested in knowing what oil you or any other fellow Tossers are putting in their front forks.

The manual states BMW Telescopic Fork Oil, but if I were to buy from elsewhere, what grade would I get?

My attitude is... leave well alone. Unless or untill you have a crash.. and need to physically inspect and/or replace em. Seems pointless even touching them otherwise.

13 years.. never HAVE put any oil into them.
