Hi guys

In need of some advice, I am in the middle of changing the seals on my F650gs Ive removed the stantions from the bike, removed the top cap and drained the oil but cant get the stantion out because the bottom bolt that holds it all in is loose but is just turning Ive tried putting a long bar down the centre of the tube but i cant grip the damper enough to stop it turning any ideas??????

Regards RB

Hi,
My brother is planning the same operation but never did this before and before a serious attempt, would you be able to tell:
- what is the play of the top cap (when you press it to remove the circleclip? Would you say around 2mm or far more?
- Is the circleclip gap large enough to be easily visible (e.g. more than 1mm large)?
These questions may look a bit... basic... it's just because of lack of experience :)
Thanks guys

The cap on the top can be pushed in by hand, which is what i did when i changed the springs and oil. It will push about 5mm below the circlip, you just need either strong fingers or a second pair of hands to tease the clip out with a pointy thing. Refitting is same as removal.. Pretty easy really.

Thanks Santrix,
That is certainly very helpful. As we could go as far as 2mm only on the top cap. I wonder what is stopping it.
Cool :thumb

Obviously you pop off the top black plastic cover, when i refer to the cap its the metal one underneath it lol.

Hi guys,
Thanks for your reassuring advices. We are getting there alright!
This site is awesome! Thanks to you all...

Pips top tips.

a.Drain the oil first, slow drain due to suction as top caps haven't been removed.

1. Before undoing anything undo the bottom two allan bolts. Get someone to sit on the bike they undo easier with compression of the springs.

2. Those top clips are a pain in the bum if not been visited for some time. PUt somw wd-40 in there, take all the weight off the forks. Push metal cap up and down to loosen the caps. Ally cap and stainless forks corrode together nicely.

3. When replacing caps, smear a large dollop of grease on everything to prevent later corrosion.

4. Be patient.
