As per the title, meeting a mate in Beaune, then have 4 and a half days to ride before needing to be back up as far as Lyon. Can't decide whether to play in the Burgundy and Massif Central areas, or head south to Millau and Gorge du Tarn?

Any suggestions?

We are happy with 6 or 8 hour days on the bike. We are there to ride not to sightsee and tour vineyards, so looking for the best riding roads more than anything else.

I've not got a GPS, so not been able to view the routres posted in this section. Good old fashioned maps and place names works for me.

Apreciate any advice and ideas on best raods to ride (or the ones to avoid).

Thanks

Burgundy / Massif Central, wins it for me.

Michelin map 1:200000 scale is your friend. Pick your own roads and towns. You appear to live in France, so you should be familiar with what the roads on the map will translate to in reality and / or the distances between places.

Yep, the Massif Central is one of the best biking areas in France.

Roe through Beaune one time, imagined that the correct pronunciation was 'Bone', saw the Hotel Foch and just had to book in.....

Right pit of a place but pleasant enough people:eek

Eh?. Some of the finest medieval architecture in Europe, a well preserved town centre, perhaps the best wine in the world, generally considered one of the gastonomic capitals of France, even by the French.

Out of town is wonderful vineyard countryside, mountains and forests.

Wine tasting on every street corner, not to mention a Saturday market that has been there for a thousand years.

What's not to like

Do you have no soul man?:nenau

Ambert?

What's Ambert like? Seems to have a good couple of day rides to the North and South, so could be a good place to spend a couple of nights maybe?

Looks like I need to get out further West too for some good roads around Mont Dore and Super Besse. Is there a small town over there that would make a particulalrly good base for a night or two?

We'll camp if the weather is reasonable.

I did whip through the Massif Central many moons ago on my YPVS 350 en route back from the south of france, but that was soo long ago I only vaguely remember the area.

We are just on our way back from Santenay now (near Beaune). If i may suggest a day out. I went to a place called Etoy in Switzerland via Poligny and La Rousses and return, 270 miles in total. Cracking day out.

Vercors Region is great - you could also make it down the the Gorge du Verdon

Sorry to have given the wrong impression, Beaune was great - Hotel Foch was the pit to which I referred:thumb2
Mind you, they gave me a back downstairs room adjacent to where I had parked my bike in their back yard, the croissant at breakfast was warm and the coffee was fresh, so not all bad:D

Next year perhaps

Just to say, I can't really add to this thread. Poor weather in the centre of France had us scampering down to the Gorge du Tarn area and back up through the Cevennes and Ardeche - all of which was great and surpassed my expectations. Massif Central will have to wait for another year...

Mont Dore itself is not a bad little town.

Chatel Guyon is also a decent base.
