What year of model. There are two different types.

Heyup Mr Steptoe, its a 1100 1995 , have had better look and i think its coming from the rubber boot , so seal kit methinks do you know where to get one from, also think i need a steel braided hose as it looks like its been chaffing perhaps on top of outer fork leg.ta in advance :flag

Recently had similar problem on my 1100. Hadn't used it for several weeks and when I just nipped out on it the front brakes failed.

Spoke to James Sherlock and he advised that a seal kit was available or a second hand complete master cylinder. I decided to go for the complete cylinder and keep original as a spare.

Give him a call on 01769 574350

I had the same problem on my 95. There was bit of corrosion on the master cylinder piston. I bought a rebuild kit. Unfortunately the leaking brake fluid already had attacked the finish on the gas tank.:censor:. The rebuild was pretty easy

I think I have this problem as Ive noticed a few spots of brake oil inside my hand guard, how much is the seal kit and what do you get? Also mine has ABS, will it have to be drained then blead? Is that easy?

Also thinking that if it need bleeding then might aswell put braided hoses on at same time save bleeding it twice :)

Just done my 1100RT. The replacement master cylinder piston with seals already fitted was about £40. I also ended up getting a new lever pivot pin as mine was solid and would not come out with the allen key. I ended up knocking a torx bit into it with an impact driver to get it out.
When you have fitted it you can save bleeding by pushing the caliper pistons back in until some fluid appears in the master cylinder. You then just top it up and away you go. Not sure if it would be the same with ABS mind you.

Same for the ABS and it is pretty straight forward. Lots online help. Just google it.

Did the same job on my '98. The pivot pin is loctited in with blue loctite, you will probably end getting it out with a Torx bit thus destroying the Allen head--so plan on a pin. They are in there VERY tightly. after that it's easy.
Good luck

I stripped out the pivot pin etc in bucharest outside Decathlon coz the brake light was sticking on so I know that comes out OK, think it may have been brake fluid causing the micro switch to stick :blast

Ill have a look over the winter when funds become availiable but it will be OK for now I guess. Id rather do this when I know I wont be riding it than strip it and have a nightmare trying to bleed the brakes like some have!

Do you just bleed it at the caliper or does the ABS unit have to be bled aswell?

Brakes

Bleeding the brakes on an 1100 is straightforward, I change the fluid on my bike every 12 months with a one man bleeding kit never had a problem. I understand the procedure becomes more complex through the 1150 to 1200's.

I change my fluid regularly due to the one problem that i have had with my bike in 50.000 miles was a leaking master cylinder due to the lack of use the bike had had prior to my buying it. I tried a re build kit but this only lasted 6 months so I had to buy a new cylinder, no problems since.

The front brake was sticking slightly on my 1100 even after cleaning the pistons etc.
Today, I noticed if I pushed the lever forward they freed off so backed off the pivot just a fraction and the brakes no longer bind:)
