in laymans terms, what's this all about ?

been told you can download a programme like an antivirus that will speed up computer

is it worth it :nenau

Imagine you have a bookshelf with loads of books on it.
You take a book out, add a few pages and try to put it back.
It wont fit any more so you stick it at the end of the bookshelf.
Repeat a few hundred times and suddenly your books are all over the place and there are loads of gaps.
This is fragmentation.
Defragmentation or 'de-fragging' is simply sorting all the books (files) into the correct order so your computer can find them easier (i.e. quicker).
De-fragging can speed your machine up if the hard drive is badly fragmented.
You don't need any additional software - it's already loaded as part of windows.
Just go start, accessories, system tools, defragmenter

It'll analyse the drive and tell you whether things are bad enough to be worth de-fragging.

There ya go !

No, probably not.

Fragments are all ther little bits of data from files that are left over when you install and uninstall progs, move files about and generally do pretty much anything on a computer.

It slows things down because it's rather like trying to read a book (a file) in a library...if you (the PC) have to go to 35 different places to read a page at a time, it'll take you ages, but if it's all together in one book, youcan just find it, read it and that's it.

Windows has its own defragmenter built in which may not be as flash or fast as one you can download (I've no idea, I've never used a different one TBH but I can't see that someone would produce a different one if there wasn't a reason like that behind it) but the windows one works fine.....

Click the START button, then ALL PROGRAMMES>SYSTEM>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS and you'll find it in there......select the drive you want to look at (if you haven't done it before, do the 'c' drive first)
then click analyse and see what the result it....accept its recomendation (does need defragging or not) ..you can have it running while you do other stuff so it's not a big deal....all you'll see is the light for the Hard drive flashing a lot and maybe a bit of whirring going on.

It can take quite a long time to complete but you can safely minimise the window while you get on with looking at pictures of naked ladies and so on.:augie

HTH :)

If your pooter is gone slow it's probably crammed with junk running in the background and junk filling up temp directories.

Download a little program called crap Cleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/

This has some veryeasy to use functions.
1) Use the cleaner to clean up everything.
2) Use their registry cleaner
3) See what's running in the Startup section (under tools) . This will make the biggest difference expeciall with the startup time and running speed.
You can stop or delete programs that start themselves when you boot up. Stuff like the software you get with printers and other programs you download are bloated with other programs taking precious resoures.
If you're not sure what you can delete, post a list of what's there.
4) Buy some more memory. Very cheap and very easy to fit (it just clicks in place.. nothing else involved)

But whatever you do, pay attention when you install it.....IIRC, it's one of those packages that tries to install that indisious Yahoo toolbar bollox unless you notice and de-select it

I really hate it when they do that

Do a full ERROR-CHECKING before you defrag, tick the box to repair while scan. The computer will need rebooting to scan for a hour or couple..

Also note; disable your screen saver whilst running a defrag program. Any interuption should be avoided. As in leave the computer alone while it fully defrags your computer.

CCleaner is ace, also see this site for good programs.
