Is there an off the peg black paint from halfords etc that looks ok to touch up the frame paint where its really thin/starting wear through anyone can recommend ?

or just go straight to the hammerite smooth ?

ta

I used a small tin of Humbrol enamel and a modellers paintbrush on my GSA. Worked a treat and inexpensive.

Wrapped the frame in black electrical insulating tape afterwards to protect it, much cheaper than a plastic guard from nippy norman/touratech etc.

Same here - hammerite smooth black did my rear subframe and looks just fine next to front frame that wasn't painted.

Im in the process of spraying my rear frame area, it wasn't too bad but had a few rusty areas around rear pegs etc. Rubbed down with wire brush and sandpaper, I used the black lidl spray version of smootherite, went on well and looks great, spray is very good too, no spitting. Well worth buying if you see it in store.

Hammerite used to be quite brittle. Today’s versions are better and the brushable version goes on nicely.
The only snag is that rust will keep going under the paint. If it gets bad enough you’ll need to remove the frame and have it done properly.

I was blessed.......previous owner of my bike had just had the frame, stands, swingarm/FD and wheels professionally powder coated.

I had mine powder coated. It really was in a bad way. Not pitted but when paint was stripped it had rust everywhere. It was rusty even under the seat bracket rubbers that entirely seal the surface.
Powder coat is ok. Next time I would have it zinc metal sprayed then etch prime and paint. Easier to touch up.

I know what you mean. I had my '98 VFR wheels powder coated in 2001 when the factory finish was peeling and I'm dreading them needing touching up. Luckily, they're still perfect. ;)

My front tyre pressure sensor leaked again to day so off to BMW for a new seal kit. The bike mechanic who fits my tyres thought I had factory finished wheels. Nope! They were powder coated by Chris Ward in Burton on Trent. He's an industrial finisher who does power coat and stove enamel. The mechanic says he gets many wheels with painted finish that can't cope with having a tyre fitted.

My frame was coated by a company that usually does car wheels but also does bike parts. The rear frame is fine, but the front (steering) frame has frazzled at the engine mounts. No corrosion thankfully as he used a high zinc base coat.

Next time I would have the wheels done by Chris or another specialist industrial coater. But IMO, the frame is better zinc sprayed and painted.
