Until recently my parents lived about an hours drive north of Marseille, for over twenty years.

Without fail it snowed in late January / early to mid-February each year. Everything should be gone by early March down in the SE corner (coastal) but in the 'middle bit' up around Dijon you can see snow until late into the month.

When we went on the Easter Turkey Trot (Easter was about as early as it can be that year) we would have got badly stuck about halfway down France had we left on the Saturday instead of the Good Friday. France was paralyzed behind us. But luck was on our side and we made it from Calais to Milan in the day.

The weatherunderground website has good historic data, as do other websites. But it's all just trends and guess work. Have a look at the forecast (or better still out of the window) nearer the time.

Whilst Nice can be nice in the early Spring, you should still expect to find snow down to 1,000m as late as April. When route planning, avoid high passes and mountain-goat tracks unless you're planning May/June or later.
