can anyone help????:type...im planning a trip to western france.....then over the border to spain.......which is the best ferry crossing is best....plymouth --roscoff??or the dover crossing.......also does anyone have any good places to stay in theses areas.......lorient.....la rochelle.....bordeaux areas...all ideas will help my trip in may.......taking 1200 gs....

considering where you live, a night crossing might make sense. The LDLines service from Portsmouth to Le Havre is a lot cheaper than Brittany Ferries. Of course it's further to travel to Brittany, but you'd do fewer miles in the UK.

I've used Poole to Cherbourg before. Poole has to be the nicest UK ferry port as the scenery adds to the holiday. The run from S Wales down to Poole is a nice journey too, with few motorway miles.

as for staying over on the way i have used the Etap hotels clean, cheap, secure parking and buffet breakfast (continental) for a little extra i go other side south via Alps so first stop Dijon or Grenoble both have Etaps. I book it up before so whatever time i roll in its sorted and peace of mind! :thumb

Depends what you want must be some great b&b's english and french run :thumb

in another thread someone mentioned that you can redeem tesco club points on the train crossing :nenau

all the best with your planning :thumb

The Brittany ferry from Poole to France is going to stop this Spring:(, not seen an exact date when yet. I've used every time to France as with the cheap night crossing you landed first thing in the morning, giving you the whole day to use.

well.....

cheers for all your thoughts.....going to go thru the tunnel i reken.....then take the trip from there,,,,have a few places to stay but dont want to book to well in advance just in case of a change of plan....seems to be plenty of b and bs...so will take the plunge into france.....:thumb2

One route to consider is Poole to St Malo on the fast cat, arrive in the afternoon and St Malo is a superb place to visit and stay for the first night. Not too expensive and then you are a good way down. Last time I did this trip I set off in the morning from St Malo and made 400 miles to Bordeaux with ease, the next day took me to Andorra. Note that accommodation in Andorra during the summer can be fantastic value as its their down season. Good luck:beerjug:

A seacat is not the most pleasant vessel on which to cross the channel. Hoverspeed had one on the Newhaven-Dieppe route. Bobbed about a lot on a minor swell which made a mate rather unwell.

On the Poole-StM route Condor use "fast ferries" made in Tasmania. Much larger and more stable. They have another service from Weymouth to StM.

£110 return in August, which is not too bad considering the distance. If you live in the SW of England or South Wales and are heading to Brittany etc you'll probably save money on fuel to make it competitive with a Dover crossing.

Book you first and last nights on the continent, otherwise start looking for a place about 4pm or when you're ready to stop or find a lovely spot.

on http://www.ldlines.co.uk/ there is definitely a drop down menu for vehicle type - I'm using Firefox 3.6 to view it. Were you using LD's own site or a 3rd party like aferry?
