Free garmin and basecamp compatible maps!

I have used THESE a number of times but I've just done a side-by-side comparison out of curiosity. There is little in it. The ones you've found give better colouring and clarity (at least in Basecamp they do) but they don't contain quite as much information.

Good discovery all the same! :thumb

Depends on where you are. In the UK I find Garmin maps better than openstreetmaps but here in Austria the OSM ones are much better than Garmin. They have much more detail and far fewer errors. We were in Bosnia last October and the Garmin maps were all but useless there. Same applies to our upcoming trip to Romania. Several of the places we hope to visit are very poorly mapped on Garmin with little if any detail. The OSM maps show more roads and more places of interest.

I can't see the point of using the German site as suggested by Andy B The official openstreetmap site you link to has the whole world not just Germany and is in English. I use it often to update my map and to give maps to guests here who have outdated maps.

Useful. I will remember this for the future.

I'm not recommending the German maps. However, it is nice to have alternatives to compare when plotting that big trip! I used OSM for a 5,000 mile trip in the US last year and they were spot on.:thumb
