Free programs

Are their any free down loadable programs/add ons ?? out there on the net that will permit me to transfer av video recordings onto computer then onto disc.
I was using windows movie maker quite well.... but for some stange reason it seems to have quit on me ?
Tried nero but apparantly I now have to buy a disc to set up.
Any ideas please.
