If you arrive early in Cherbourg for the afternoon or later ferry and want to eat landward side well, visit the Les Eléis shopping mall 2 miles away.
There is the Wok Sun Chinese buffet restaurant. Opens at 12 and has a great menu. Food is hot, tasty and plentiful. You can choose cooked or raw and there is a chef on hand to fry it for you.
Lovely desserts and an assortment of ice cream. Fill yer boots.
Costs around €21 pp.

So you're in France... and recommending a Chinese buffet restaurant ? There's one of those in Gosport... "all you can eat" too !

Actually... not a recommendation for a Cherbourg eatery... but when in France, I often look for the Michelin starred restaurants that offer the 'prix fixe' menu (someone told me it was French law to offer one, but that may be nonsense)... I did one in Roscoff about 8 years ago, €32 a head !! It was the best food I've ever tasted... even the roquefort was incredible, and they didn't even cook that !

prices have changed somewhat

just looked in Le Havre as catching an evening ferry. https://www.jeanluc-tartarin.com/fr/ has fixed price menus. Lunch 50 odd euros. Dinner, cheapest is 99 before you have bought a drink. I think we will be looking at somewhere in the Docks Vauban development, although not the Wok Grill https://maps.app.goo.gl/x7FDPS1LCdiDwkkR6
