Hi guys,

riding down to house in Toulouse at the end of August,looking to go Poole -Cherbourg and then down the West coast/western side of France before heading inland from Bordeaux. Plan on taking 2/3 days to do it taking in sites and camping on the way. Anyone got any suggestions on good routes or good roads you can recommend. Also any good reasonable campsites on route. Cheers.

All the roads in France are good and at the end of August, most people will be heading the opposite way. No idea which roads to recommend, but if you look on www.viamichelin.fr and choose the green roads ye'll not go far wrong.
As far as campsites go, we've always used this site. Here

If you're south of Nantes there is a campsite in St Hilaire de Loulay (near Montaigu). It is on a farm owned by a couple of French bikers. It has a huge barn with table and chairs and a fridge for cooking and eating and is very cheap. Lovely couple but they don't speak a lot of English

I know I am bias because I live just North of Brive, but have you considered riding down the middle ie down the coast to La Rochelle then inland to say Limoges and then down through the Volcanic region and into Toulouse ?

I must agree with Nomad on the routes
I live in the south west and tend to stay well clear of the cost areas as they a flat and dead boring .
If I wont good roads that are fun, then I tend to go in land east towards central France
Or south to them there big hills.

Yes thats the sort of thing we fancied doing. was going to head inland from Bordeaux, but perhaps heading in land from La Rochelle may be a better option. cheers

as orbit pointed above, well worth trip there, some great roads and more bends than you can possibly imagine

I rode down that way in June. I took autoroutes to Limoges and had then planned a route on minor roads towards Agen. However, a combination fo factors led me to take the N21 all the way - via Perigueux, Bergerac and Villeneuve. The road, which is not a Michelin green road, was stunning - fast, good scenery, enough traffic to make overtaking fun...

I have previously ridden on N-roads south from Limoges via Brive and Cahors. That was good too!

Can't recommend any campsites, but there are loads. The Campings Municipals are usually reliable. If you fancy a camping al la ferme, you add a touch of excitement. What will the toilets be like? Will there be a mad dog? Or (as happend to us once near Perigueux) will you be the only people in a deserted an didyllic wood in the middle of nowhere where the farmers wife insists on giving you excellent and substantial food for no cost?

Oradour sur Glane is worth an hour of two's visit. And if you fancy seeing an impossibly pretty little riverside village, Brantome is somewhere nearby. As is Bourdeilles. And Perigueux itself is chock full of lovely restaurants and cafes.

Cahors is simply the best city in France. I'll have no arguments on this point...

Basically, I'm just bloody jealous!
