Friction plate or drive shaft trouble

Happy new year everyone, I suppose it's getting a little late to say that no though. Anyway, I noticed that under quite hard acceleration on my r1100gs (about 5000rpm) there was a loss of power I thought it was the friction plate but after doing a bit of searching on here it seems it could be the drive shaft slipping. So i've had it up on the centre stand with the rear wheel off the ground and put it in gear. And it makes a clanking noise from the drive shaft area (i'm not the person to know exactly where this is but it's at the back of the bike the noise is coming from) as the wheel is turning. Is this the drive shaft, is it safe to ride, how much to fix it?....So many questions and all I want to do is ride:( :( :(

....I'm begining to think the slip "spanner" made when he sold it to me, saying 'white elephant, i mean white envelope' was more telling than i first thought.

They all make make a terrible racket if you run them in gear on the stand.

Your advised not to do that, as the shaft isn't in a good position, it's at it's full lower articulation because the suspension isn't compressed, and the transmission train isn't under any load.

When you say "lack of power", do you mean the revs rise, but without any gain in speed.

What makes you think it's the shaft and not the clutch. 95% of the time it's the clutch - the shaft rubber insert only normally goes if abused i.e. wheelies, lots of hard offroad, and grandprix starts.

Pull the paralever gaitor back and look for rubber dust or particals inside.

What a silly sod i am, didn't know not to run it on the centre stand... What i mean by lack of power is that the revs go up suddenly as if resistance is lost but the bike speed doesn't increase, it mainly happens on overtaking (with my style of riding anway, i'm not into racing away from lights and wheelies) it'll pull as normal and then at about 5000rpm, it'll stop accelerating as much but the revs rise....Right i'm repeating myself like an old codger:rob so i'll shut up.

I only ran the bike on the centre stand for about 30 seconds, will this have caused any damage?:o :o :o

Aghhhh! 10 minutes.... well i guess there's just enough time to get to the shops and back...oh well:P :P

I assume that it's the clutch, how much for you to fix it for me Mr Steptoe sir?:bow :bow :bow

Thats the most sensible thing you've typed on this post TOSA:thumb :thumb

Of course, at this time of year wiv wet roads and the like, it could just be good ol' wheel spin.;)

What's yer rear tyre like?

My tyres are tourances, but i'd say it wasn't wheel spin, as i would expect the bike to squirm a bit to the sides as it lost traction. But as i've proved already, what would I know?

Steptoe, is it possible to get a rough estimate for how much it'll take to fix my clutch?

OOOo can you hear the sucking of teeth already????

He's shaking his head with that look on his face......then a little shrug.......

Sorry missed your first request :D
£400, all parts and labour ( thats a complete clutch, every part, not just a friction plate), and use of a loan bike .
