I removed the engine bars on my 05 1200GS to fit some shorter Wiblers, and in doing so a small nut fell from the left side of the engine, just above the cylinder.

It's proving tricky/awkward/irritating/beat-the-cat-ish getting the nut back in, there's feck all room for a spanner or anything, and the nut seems to need to fit into a recess at the front of the front subframe bracket.

I've done this before, once, but this time it seems trickier, feck knows why, so I was wondered a) is a simple stainless nut really what should be going in here, or has someone (previous owner/dealer) lost the correct item and the stainless nut is a bodge and b) is there some simple cunning wheeze someone has found to sort this?

Advice will be gratefully received.

Isn't that just a spacer which needs to fit between the crashbar mounting lug and subframe? I might be tempted to hold it behind the lug with finger or long pliers, push the M6 bolt through the lug and spacer so that the spacer 'hangs' on the centimetre or so of bolt, then 'fish, for the M6 hole in the subframe. It might be easier if the other crashbar mounts are loosened off a bit to give some jiggle-room so you can 'find the hole', so to speak.

Are those Hepco & Bekka bars? I fitted mine five and a half years ago, never taken them off since.

I don't remember there being a bigg issue with fitting the nuts as in your photo. But I could well have used two or three extencion bars on the 1/8th ratchet to make it easier. Straight in from the side as opposed to fiddeling around in a very tight place.

As richtel says, keep everything loose till you have all the nuts in place.

This nut is I believe a captive nut brazed / soldered on the inside of the engine bracket (certainly the one on the other side is).

When that one came off I managed to use a pair of fine nosed tweezers to hold it in place while I put the bolt in, however not sure how easy it will be to remove next time.

I have purchased some 'cage nuts' that I hope will work but am waiting until the next service before trying them.

A piece of cardboard and some bluetack sorted my problem out. But it will fall out again next time, of that I am sure. No sign it was ever brazed either, so some miscreant dislodged and lost the original, that's for certain.
