I took my 09 GS 80k miles, in for an MOT which it passed but with an advisory saying that there was lateral movement on the front discs.

I had a quick feel (oooh) and if I pull the disc upward I can feel a faint click. As these discs are supposed to be floating I would assume that there should be some small movement.

I've never used this MOT tester before and I think that he was a chancer trying to drum up some work as he also said that there was uneven wear on the rear pads. I took them out and they are perfect. He also said that my steering head bearings were worn but he wouldn't put anything on the cert!!

I don't think I'll be going to him again. It would be interesting to hear peoples thoughts on the discs though.

Cheers

Not sure about your moto, by my 2011 TC has floating discs. In fact, when I bought it, I applied the brakes (engine off) then tried rocking the bike forward and back. I discovered there was indeed some play. On closet inspection, I could move the discs by hand. I visited a BMW Motorrad showroom tried the same test on display bikes. Identical!

But saying all this, your version of bike will matter as will how much play and in what directions. It is possible the washers/spacers need replacement. Or.... You've only just noticed they move

Floating discs are supposed to have some movement, hence " floating "

I guess the MOT tester had to put "something" down to show he'd looked at it properly, if the movement is excessive he'd have said that was the case :nenau

If you are worried I'm sure a friendly tech would cast an eye over it :thumby:

the discs on my 1150 have been advised for the last 4 years , verbally , changed the other week @ 119k miles.

Some movement HAS to be there , he should be looking for cracks and warping.

I get the same advisory on my 2010 1200 GSA, every year...same discs :blast

Thanks for all the replies. I'm not worried at all about the brakes just about the MOT tester!
