I need to replace the pistons on my left hand caliper (i discovered over the weekend the face on one has broken).

I was thinking to split the caliper since it looks like a very convenient way to access everything and generally clean everything thoroughly.

Has anyone done this (split the calipers)? Is it a routine thing to do or am i entering a whole load of hassle?!

Grateful for some experienced wisdom :-)

What bike, 1100 or 1150 ?

What calipers, the 1150 has three types ?

By your description, if it's the plastic face on the piston that's broken, don't worry about it, it's not a problem .

Thanks Steptoe. I'm new to these bikes so interested to know the face thats broken is just plastic.

It's a 2000 1150GS with ABS. Calipers are marked with Brembo.

The pistons on the left side were not so keen to push back in by hand which combined with that broken bit i just thought i'd give them some attention while the weather is still (almost) behaving itself!

What do you think about splitting the calipers though. One to avoid or is just long winded way of doing the job?

Cheers

Thanks again Steptoe. It's that bit of experienced wisdom i was looking for!

I'm not new to bike at all and quite capable of doing most of what i ever need to do. But in my persuit to learn more about the bike i have no interest in making a load of unnecessary work either!

Cheers
