front casing corrosion

I have had this problem for some time but thought it was just wear and tear due to salt we have on the roads these days so didn't think anything of it until I spotted something today.

I've ridden through three winters and always tried to rinse down regularly to avoid problems but only have this problem on the front casing.

Just coming up to three years old - do you think there is much chance of a
warranty replacement? Is this a fairly common problem?

I'm sure there are threads about this but can't find anything on searches I've tried.

No chance on warranty, no corrosion cover in third year. It's not going to rot through so don't worry about it :beerjug:

yes

there's some sort of baffle inside the casing that apparently soaks up water. The one on my last GS was in a hell of a state after about a year.

Its a very common fault. Worth asking BMW for a goodwill replacement. They might stump up for the parts, but you'll probably have to pay for the labour. I seem to remember its about £250 for a new one (inc. labour) last time I asked.

Funnily enough I had exactly the same experience last week, pretty bad corrosion on the front cover but coming up to 3 yrs old in March, so thought no chance! .. Rang dealer on the back of a positive post here and they agreed to supply the part foc. I paid the labour -so £99+VAT fitted - including a new alternator belt. - I'm reasonaby happy with that, though wish I'd done something about it during the warranty period. :(

I'll try and give this one a bit more TLC and the occasional squirt of FS 365!

Good luck.

Leaving the foam out might help stop the corrosion around the bottom of the casing, but it doesn't stop the casing corroding around all the other bolts. Sorry. I'm going to ask me dealer if I can have a new casing to powder coat myself before fitment. My last replacement was in Aug 06 and the new casing is now corroded. The replacement was supposed to stop this, obviously not.

I guess that's a result. As you've contributed to the cost I think you'll get a two year warranty with the new engine cover.

Shouldn't really corrode in the first place, but thats another story..................
