I have just taken delivery of a new 09 R1200GS. I asked for the lower seat but have noticed that there seems to be a much larger gap between the tank and the seat with this seat than the standard one. Yes....the seat is fitted correctly :rolleyes:

I have not measured the gap or taken a photo but it looks wide enough that I would think water will easily run down during washing or riding in rain.

I wondered if anyone had noticed this.

Hi

I don't know about the low seat, but my 2005 GS with an adult (:)) seat has a big gap (maybe approaching 1cm from memory) when on high setting, but is relatively neat fitting when on the lower setting. Maybe the 2009 tank shape makes things different though.

I currently have it high at front and low at back, which makes the gap bigger still. I too wondered about water ingress, but figured it's never going to be water tight, so apart from aesthetics it probably doesn't matter too much if the gap is big or small. I also don't wash my bike, just to be sure.

Enjoy the new bike!

If I put my standard seat on the low setting I get the same gap, as you've got the low seat I'd expect the same. Water ingress won't be a problem as even on the standard seat height there's still a gap, and it'll never be watertight.

I am going for a ride today and will call in for a brew at BMW...I think that I may well be hearing that phrase before the day is out! :comfort

Thanks also for the other contributions. It just seemed odd that the standard seat fits closer to the tank than the lower one. I can't think of any design reason why it should. Maybe I will change it for the standard one.

Wont stop me riding it mind you - BEEMING! :D

Even it is not recommend in the user manual I put low at the front and high at the back; have done lot of miles without any problems, no gap between the seat and the tank and with a riding position more on the front which is better for the front wheel grip;
try it ! a bit confusing at the beginning but you will quickly get used to it

That is OK if you have the standard seat but I have the lowered seat which does not have any options for lowering or highering by moving the bar.

The lowered seat makes the seat height 845mm compared with 860mm which is the lowest setting for the standard seat. Not much in it so I may change my seat for the standard one and try Marco's configuration.

Once again - thanks to all. :thumb

Didn't bother ringing the changes and trying standard seat - the weather told me all I needed to know...it absolutely tossed it down for the 100 mile round trip to the dealer's. The gap coped with the weather so I can cope with the gap!!

Thanks again to all for the advice.
