Hello

I’m making a cleaning and painting operation to my R 100 GS and last night while disassembling the rear mud guar I notice that the front silencer and rear silencer are completed rotten!

:mad::mad::mad:

The front silencer can not be assembled (is broken) and the rear has so many holes that I will not have the courage to assemble it again…

So since I’m very low on money what is my best option? Should I substitute the front silencer with a V tube? (do I loose any power?)

Does any one have used front and/or rear silencers to sell? I need a cheap solution to put the bike rolling…

Thanks in advance

On a paralever GS you have:

1). The two front pipes - downpipes

2). A collector box or (Y piece)

3). Silencer at the rear

In original trim

The Silencer is stainless - I am surprised that it is no good, unless the brackets have broken off or a weld has split - expensive to replace

The Collector box is chrome plated and rusts from the top - expensive to replace - a cheap alternative is a Y piece - £100

The front down pipes are mild steel

Which do you need - all three?

I can make some photos of the rotten stainless steel rear silencer to use as a case study…:mad::mad:

The bike was 140 000kms

I had to replace my rear silencer last year. The baffling had blown out (probably caused by having a Y piece fitted). I fitted a Keihan silencer - cost around £350.

The cheapest option if your collector box has rotted is to fit a Y piece, however there is a loss in mid range performance and the bike will run beter with a collector box. A new collector is around the £200 mark. a new pair of stainless downpipes is £163 from Motorworks.

Collector boxes often come up for sale both here and on eBay. Folk replace perfectly good ones to go down the Y-piece route only to find out later that airheads run best with collector boxes. I think I paid £15 for my last one so it might be worth waiting a bit to see what comes along.
Good luck
Nick
