Frozen Ignition Barrel

Come on guys, top tip time!

My ignition barrel was frozen this morning, what your tips to stop this happening please. Putting in garage is out of question to much other junk in the way!

Will a good squirt of WD 40 do the trick? Or a can of de-icer....

WD should stop it from happening. Didnt happen to me on Sunday even although I expected it to since it was -3 and the bike was very wet prior to it freezing. Personally I am going to invest in a cover after the xmas silynes is over.

Trouble with de-icer is that its a pretty effective de-greaser.
I would say a drop of warm oil and a warm key.

Whatever you do, don't blow into the barrel.
You'll fill it with moisture and make it worse next time.

To stop it happening in the future just put a rag over the ignition. Keep the frost off.

Tesco's UHT milk 1 litre plastic bottle tops are the perfect size to fit over the barrel; when you put the key in, the bottle top is a snug fit over the vrake master cylinder so you don;t lose it.

WD-40 only lasts a short time, and I have never been convinced of the long-term wisdom of using that on electrical cables and connections. Covering the lock stops dew and precipitation from seeping into the lock to freeze. I have tried de-icer, hot water, tea, etc to free off the locks in the past years, nothing was as good as stopping it happening in the first place with cover.

Don't know why TT, Wunderlich or any of the other German Bling merchants haven't come up with something suimilar, but much more expensive.

Thanks for the advice guys i will try the milk carton and a squirt of WD 40 i think, just to be safe. I bent slightly one of the keys too so will need to straighten that as well.
