I'm plaqued by shit in the fuel on all three airheads at the minute. I've tried different petrol stations and grades of fuel but nothing stops it. I normally have the small cone shaped filters fitted, these are obviously not upto the job.

I'm seriously hacked off with cleaning carbs out. Most of the time it's just floodiing on one of the carbs that clears by dropping the float bowl and letting some fuel run through but yesterday the R100 picked up a piece thats blocked the main jet :spitfire

Any other recomendations for filters and somewhere to buy them? :beerjug:

The two airheads I've got with metal tanks are full of shite due to water ingress causing corrosion over the last 20odd years .I'm sealing the tanks up with some sealer and hopefully cure my filter/carb prob at source. Funnily enough the GRP tank on the PD seems to keep it's carbs and filters clean.

There you go Grandma, how was the egg sucking lesson?

Good tip on the tank, also "Pingle" make the best quality filters for bikes. If you are still plagued, look at a marine application if you have the space....

Hey Rob.....I`m not taking the piss or anything, but you`re not accidentally running them all with the fuel taps set to the reserve position are you ???

It seems odd to be getting that much trouble across the three bikes :nenau

yes, I was working on a mates airhead that was continually choking filters, as I put the tank back on, my fingers went through the bottom by the taps.
The hole was about 30mm by 20mm.

quite a mess !

Tarka,

No all run on the normal position.. I avoid reserve like the plaque.

I've got one bike thats been petsealed, one with a recently cleaned out tank and the Monos tank is virtually new - new float needles fitted at great expense as well :( . They are all getting very fine grit in them that pass through the hein gerike filters. My mates airhead has similar issues and his Guzzi has chunks in it that look like little bits of hard dog poo. :nenau

Silly question Rob....

...you have got the little wire gauze push-on filters fitted INSIDE the tank on the taps haven't you........? :augie

It is odd that all 3 airheads have this prob??

Good suggestion Charlie :thumb2

It is very odd that the three are suffering :nenau

Rob,have you and your mate been frequenting the same petrol station, perchance ??

( I ask this because I once had weeping float bowl gaskets on the LegoBike...even after fitting brand new ones...and the problem went away after using petrol from a different station....weird,I know, but true...)

I assume not every cap can be opened by scrotes and some cack poured in the tanks ?

I suppose there's nothing stopping a garage having corrosion problems in their storage tanks. They probably turn a blind eye to a little bit of silt and corrosion in a 20,000ltr tank hoping that vehicle fuel filters keep it at bay.
Cheaper than digging it out.

My mate lives 15 miles away.

I've tried flushing the tanks out and every thing else I can possibly think of.

A decent set of filters will sort the problem.

Where can I get Pingle filters from?

I think Pikey hit in on the head when he mentioned crap in the storage tanks.. I had a load of water in one tank full a few weeks back.

They do ship internationally.......

Thanks for the info.

They really look the business. I'm going to order a couple for my R100GS PD.................. Just away to measure the fuel pipe:)

Just a word of caution, sizes quoted are ID hose measurements, not sure the standard over here.....:nenau

American NPT & British BSP threads are so close as not to worry unless it's stainless to stainless...

I just use the cheap filters from part co they are about £1 each:thumb2
if they do get full of crap just reverse flush them if you are out somewhere or replace if at home they are see though so you can see if thy are clogging up
I’ve used them for years on lots of different bikes and cars with out any problems

Thanks Bob. I'm all sorted now. I had the cheapo filters filtted but they still let grit past.

I have the same issue but with just one bike. Halfords sell a reasonably small hi-flow filter part no HFF 201 which is a paper type and will filter down to 10microns price £2.69.

Lubricate the hoses and filters before inserting, use hose clips, £1.69 from Halfords. Be careful not to damage the filters.

The filters are see-through and will allow large throttle openings as they have a large surface area.

Not sexy or expensive but the reliable and will catch all muck in the fuel.

The result is leak-free carbs.

Fuel Taps on Reserve

After filling my PD's tank, I *always* run on reserve for the first 300 km, before switching over to normal. This ensures that if and when you do need to access the last few litres, the tank, taps and lines will be already be clean.

I wouldn't like to have to rely on a reserve that hadn't been used for months (or years)!
