Fuel gauge not working correctly...

Hi. I have a 2002 BMW R1150GS and the fuel gauge does not work correctly!
I fill it up and sometimes it shows 9 bars on the gauge but...
within riding 1/2 miles it slowly goes down to no bars!
Ocassionally shows 4 bars or 3 but mostly no bars at all!!!
I ride by the trip anyhow but would like the gauge to work too!
Any ideas what may be the problem?

Have a look at the electrical connector. Located behind the right hand black plastic cover below the tank. Black connector with 4 wires. You may have some corrosion on the pins. Try making and breaking the connector a few times, this might shift the corrosion. See if that improves your symptoms.
