Fuel on the fire

G'Day ...

Been lurking here for a bit, trying to read as much as I can in between listening to Mrs Poe, kiddie duty, working and sleeping.

There's so much good stuff here ... and great pics too.

I've been trying to get bikes out of my system for years now (I'm only 34 he, he). You know ... got two kids to think about ... money's short ... can't take the whole family with me etc. etc.

My reason for posting?

To ask a question ...

How the hell do you others lurking here handle it if you don't currently have a bike?

This site is like fuel on the fire ... I may have been better off in my quietly (or not-so-quietly) depressed state if I'd never found it.

Now I've gone and dug out all my BMW GS brochures again and drool everyday, all day.

All my thoughts of touring and riding in general (and living again) have been rekindled.

What am I to do????

What do you others do who aren't in a situation to get back into it yet????

Cheers,
Poe :)

Badly. Fortunately, it was for a short period, and I solved it by getting a GS three years ago....

Go for it

Poe,

Boldly go where other GS riders have gone before and get yourself the carlsberg, of bikes, ( probably the best bike in the world)

life is to short to sit and think about it, You could wake up tomorrow dead, lol, wishing you had bought a Gs, where there's a will there's away mate.

ITS ONLY MONEY, you can't take it with you.

Regards Joe

Morning Poe.:beerjug:

I sold the cats into slavery, sent my partner out to work down a mine and am currently (like everyone else in the UK) on the run from the taxman - but I got my GS!

Do it - you really won't regret it...

What do GSes cost in your part of the world?

MMC :D

Thanks for the responses!

A new GSA here costs £13400 (€19950) according to BMW Finland's website.

I'll be buying one sometime after returning to Oz (Septemberish). Not too many around second hand there.

I had a test ride on one a few years ago (in Oz) for only a short time and after reading posts here can't wait to have another ride for a longer time.

I gave it back to the dealer, admittedly disappointed. I was used to my old GPZ 900. Compared to that the BM (R1100GS) seemed awkward, too firm, too wide handlebars and it vibrated a lot.

And jeez those instruments are a long way away.

Other than those things it seems to be the perfect all-rounder with shaft drive (got sick of oiling & adjusting the chain).

There is something strangely beautiful about them. They are ugly beasts but nice to look at at the same time. Hard to describe.

Want to hear a story??

I was in England chatting to a car salesman last year (Ossie was his name, from Toyota in Dunstable, Beds if anyone knows of him) ... anyway we were talking about bikes and stuff and he said he'd like to buy a GSA and ship it overland to Asia along with some of his mates bikes, so they could ride back to the UK from there.

I asked if he'd like to tour Oz at some point.

He said, "Yes."

So I said why don't you order a GSA with UK spec from Oz, pick it up there and tour on it, then ride it back via Asia.

He gets a new bike, perfectly sellable (I guess) in the UK later, pays no bike hire, gets his trip around Oz, then Asia to UK done in the direction he wants.

On another point ... if my memmory serves me correctly, a dealer in Oz (BMW Alice Springs or somebody or other) was offering a one way airfare to people who'd buy a BM from them.

They'd fly in, buy the bike then ride it home.

That'd be a great idea for you blokes/girls in the UK eh?

(Don't know if there'd be any difference in spec between UK & Aus bikes ... do you?)

Thanks for reading.

Poe :)

Hi Poe...welcome to the madhouse :D

Don't start at the top.......there should well be a GS for every wallet.......you could get a secondhand adv FOR 70% of the new price...failing that, you can get an 1150 for down to 50% of the original price.....

Going down from there, an 1100 is still a very fine bike......or even an airhead, they seem to go from about £2000 or less over here for a working example..

If the worst comes to the worst, you could even get a 1200.......

 ;) :D

Just get a bike, any bike will do:D

When we came here to live and the £££s were a bit tight I could only justify a Honda Kinetic 100cc scooter, on the basis that the ex could probably ride it as well. (She did, and ended up in hospital:eek: )

I spent a lot of time exploring the local villages and tracks on that scoot, things got better and I moved up through a used CB750 Custom to new bikes.

Point is: 2 wheels are better than 4...period:cool:

Poe,

Your first mission for UKGSER, should you decide to accept it (and you will :D ), is to find out more about this and let us know!

Been there Mate I know what you mean...

Look kids and a wife is a Great thing? Start out with what you can afford? Fix up a cheap bike, get advise first! Then a bit more? Won't be long before you will have a photo of those Kids sitting on Dad's bike. They will be loving a Happy Dad. I did and I was a single Dad, true! You can too. Get an old GS 11 its a start and they are great. All the best. Big Jim. Aus.

Poe,

Welcome to the merde house mate :thumb

Any bike is better than no bike - get one of these in the meantime :D
