Fuel Pump Relay - Bypass

I've recently had to fit a new fuel pump relay, and I'm thinking I can use the old one as an emergency bypass if needed. Does anyone know, and please bear in mind I know nothing whatsoever about mechanics or electrics) if it's possible for me to just snip the wires from the old broken unit, rejoin them without the pump unit, and use this as a bypass?
