Hi Guys, Just got me a GS1200 08 mod. Only about 2.5k on the clock but it's had a hard life, been used as a training bike for the BMW off road school.
I am putting it back to original pristine condition, but it sounds like the tappetts or something need setting up, or are they all a bit noisey ?
It shows a service in the book just before i got it, but the oil looks like it came out of my tractor, and that's only serviced once every blue moon ! The air filter was just a solid block of mud, but apart from that it runs and rides great.
Are the tappetts adjustable ?
Any info or advice gratefully accepted.

Ride safe, Timo

i have a 07 1200 and yes they are noisy......i never ride without earplug.......thats why they call them tractors..........;)

Hey Timo, I've an 08 too and find the oil level affects noise from the engine - sight glass level at the top and it sounds smooth (well as smooth as it can!), if the level drops to half in the sight glass it actually sounds pretty rattley...

and have a look here, Steve E mentions a thread you might wanna search

what a din

hi
mine rattles to ,also clunks on startup, smoke screen as well if left on side stand:mad:.makes some strange noises when off throttle slowing down to .like marbles in a bean can rolling around ,weird ,has not stopped yet ?.
do worry some days about it ,worse with no ear plugs ..thought i had a friday afternoon bike at first.
pb

I put up with the rattles for ages, everyone saying, yep they all do that. so i followed the instructions and did my own end float adjustment and valve clearances, now there is only slight noise above 6k revs and a little on forst start up (half a second). Its like a different bike now, and throttle responce is a lot smoother....I have an 05 with 42k on it.

Hi Tim,

It's normally the rocker shaft end float mate, not the tappets that need setting up. I would suggest getting a dlr to do it as i know the off rd school, (i bought a bike from them as well!), and servicing is not on the list as a top priority...:augie

Has it had a 600 service? if so who by? if in doubt, get another one done. This is a big service, not just an oil & filter change as some think, it includes tappet and rocker shaft end float adjustment, re-torque cylinder heads, change final drive oil, (this is VERY important) amongst other things. It might seem extreme but will be worth it, trust me.
