The attached picture is the '88 GS headstock:

Never having played with one of these 'cos mines a '95 GS, a couple of questions...

The cone of the top race is just a sliding fit onto the stem - yes?
Do you adjust the bearings before the top yoke is fitted?
ie. is the adjuster (8) recessed in the top yoke?

Cheers,
John

Loosen the pinch bolts ( 11 ) and then adjust ( after loosening the centre nut of course :thumb2

Ah... probably crap wording on my part...
Can the adjuster nut (8) be got at with a "C" spanner with the top yoke in place on the standard unit?

I just got some aftermarket yokes and that adjuster is recessed so I'm assuming I have to do the bearing adjustment before the top goes on :nenau

Yes, I think the standard yoke allows bearing adjustment with top yoke in place :thumb2 ( would look but it is dark outside and the bogey man might get me :yikes! )

Your replacement looks like all done with top yoke moved upwards about 10mm (obviously loosened pinch bolts etc ):)

I was getting hung up on the way the later PD's are set up with the big knurled knob:green gri that carries the cone and this is just slipped on.
Still waiting on bearings though, so that will be New Year no doubt:(

Cheers,
John
