G/S Rear Shock and GS fork

Hi,

I'm a really new member, but I always read the forum. I decided to ask for help. I have a G/S and want to change the rear shock, here in Argentina it's hard to get and pay it. Somebody maybe know about an used in good shape, or a sale, or something.

I`m planning/dreaming to change the fork for a GS one, but there are a few bikes....and nobody want to quit to their fork :D

Well, thank.

Nicolas.

Hi,

I tought that in Europe would be easier to get a GS fork, because a lot more bikes are no more on general good shape to rode or other change for WP or Marzocchis, etc. But I see that it's no so true.

Here, the police used a lot of BM's, R60/5, R60/7, R80 (1981), R 100 RT, so this is our platform. But BM sold particular bikes, my R 80 it's an example, like the R100GS ,of a friend (that is in my house) that he wants to sell. He offer it to buy but I prefer my G/S.

Talking abuot the Ohlins the same as above, anyway in this case I have no dealer and if I buy a new one the argentinian costum take the %50 it's a lot of.....

Sorry abuot lengh of the reply.

Saludos bob, en el verano me encontre con un español en Uspallata, Mendoza (casi al pie del Aconcagua) con una R100GS.
No somos muchos los GSeros aqui pero andamos por todos lados.

Cheers.

We share problems....

I also have to import stuff by myself and pay taxes on them. that's life.
Try Ebay Germany, there's a lot of bikes that are being taken appart there and GS parts for sale. The problem is not everyone will be ready to make an effort and send stuff overseas. Also you need to understand some German to get along.
You may try Siebenrock as they also salvage older bikes.

My advice for the forks is to find a knackered Honda Africa Twin or Yamaha XT600 and nick the whole front end. They'll be far better than any BMW things.
There must be a "Round the World" biker coming through soon. You can have his!

Parts to Argentina...

Buen dia Nicholas..

If you want original parts, it is not so easy, I know that for the older stuff you probably have to look in Buenos Aries or in Europe. If you don't mind so much then the suggestion to fit a Jap front end makes a lot of financial sense. The mechanics in Argentina are great, very can-do and creative!!!

I have taken parts for my '85 80G/S in my baggage to Mendoza. After haggling with the customs at BsAs I was able to get a new 32 ltr tank, new Technoflex shock, service kit, and various small spares through for US$160.

I had to age the stuff down, make it dirty and look not new! I also had an 'invoice' showing 'used parts' and prices at 25%. At that time, 2 years ago, the import duty was 100% for vehicle parts, but it is less now.

If you find a pair of forks over here let me know, the important thing is getting them packed and the paperwork to show a lesser value, something that most of the dealers here will not help you with.

Muchas suerte

Saludos

Charlie

Hi Charlie b,

Yes I heard about the costums method of enter a part "used" and pay no tax. To do that, I need somebody to send me the stuffs. Put in box, but before do the make-up.

I plan to buy a new rear shock but here it's almost impossible, I thought in an Ohlins ¿what are you using, "..Tecnoflex.."?. I thnk that the GS fork going to be difficult to get in anywhere.

Talking of frnts Japs, which is recomended, it need to have a correct travel/brakes/etc?

Have you made any other modification to the G/S?

I have some friends in Mendoza, and a lots of friends in Buenos Aires (some of them mechanics) , aparts from that I like to work in my bike.

Saludos de Argentina.
Nicolas.
