G450X - Any had more than 70 hrs use yet?

Certainly on KTMs and 'Bergs (dunno about the BMW).

Whereas the DR-Z 400 has an oil capacity of 2.4 litres, the EXC KTMs only have about 1 litre of oil. It's important, therefore, to use fully synth and to change it regularly as it is worked pretty hard.

Greg

Thanks Greg - sounds like another reason to stick to the HP2

drz 400 is 1,8 L oil.

all 450 competation bike ave those maintenace schedules,
only the dy hards do the maintance full revission, all the others don open the engine unless its broken and not every 70-90 hourse.

oil and filter and grease here and there bearings check etc that important valve check also.

We're both wrong - it's 1.9 litres capacity (1.7 litre refill when you change oil; 1.8 litre changing oil + filter) .

I've also just checked for my Husaberg - 1.0 litres - so my point is still valid - the oil has to work much harder on KTMs etc

Greg

yip, have have 84 hours on mine or 2100 miles, not done anything to mine apart from usual maintainance for a off road bike, chain, tyres, brake pads.not missed a beat.loving it.

Nearly 100 hrs on mine, hasn't gone bang, change the oil/filter every time it's due, clean air filter and do the valve clearances. Also the usual chain maintenance etc. :thumb

Just don't rev the nuts of the engine, treat it with respect.

85 hrs

Has anyone here had more than 70hrs use of their G450X yet?

Did you bother with the recommended 70hr engine strip down / inspect?

What were the findings?

Or are you not bothering, and waiting for something to go wrong?

Am asking as thinking of buying one for green laning, and a bit nervous if what I'm letting myself in for.

Thx.

yip got 85hrs on mine now, not done any thing differnt you would do on any other enduro bike that lives in mud sh~t all day.loving it, i average 150/180 miles every time we go out.

So that's an oil change every time you get home??

I pick mine up on Sat from a BMW dealer with 10hrs use. Bring it on!

Go on then.. how much did that cost you ?? I think it would be £4500 max now ;)

I have seen a used 58 plate bikw with a full remus system on, power plug and a speedbrain graphics kit on for £4300 only yesterday

1 thing I do know is they will drop money like a falling stone compared to other brands.

I really liked my bike whilst I owned it, but I am a lot happier now with my 2009 400 EXCR :D:D

Just purely and simply because it will hold a good resale value over a few years.

Want a bet? BMW G450Xs are still relatively rare so I think the re-sale will keep higher than the ten to a penny KTMs. Also you have the stainless steel frame which will age a lot better than KTMs patented easy rust frame...

I also think that now with the Dakar and other Rallyes becoming 450cc maximum, BMW G450Xs may well become the Rallye bike of choice....

Especially as the factory enduro team are having a woeful time in WEC

If they were NO.1 then 450X would be really in demand

KTM and more importantly Huaqvarna must be feeling a bit smug:cool::D

I'd like to see a KTM or Husqvarna 400/450 win the Africa Race (basically the same route as the old Dakar) without replacing ANY parts throughout the duration of the rally....

"and what's even more remarkable is that his G 450 X BMW didn't even need a single part replacing throughout the rally's duration. All that was required was an oil change and filter cleaning. "

Sadly mine took on the start of a terminal rattle a few days ago, dropping the oil today showed more than normal debris on the magnetic plug and the strainers had swarf in them which is not normal.

This is un-raced regularly serviced with just under 60 hours on the clock. In fact I can even count the number of times I have dropped it, I have been that nice to it. :(

Spoke to my BWM dealer and they said bring it in and they will have a listen, they also tell me I have the highest hours of any GX's they have sold so this is an unknown quantity to them.

Soooo, it is inside the 70 hour cut off, I have never had the over revs flash up and even have a switch to swap between maps and mostly use the low power apart from some forest lanes in DK so I do wonder what they will say.

I thik that you've been extemely unlucky if your engine has developed a death-rattle.

70 hours for a modern engine is nothing. There are loads of people who drive/ride 70 hours in a week.

Yours apart, I still think that very few - BMWs or KTMs - will let go at 70 hours - so long as the basics (oil, filters and coolant) have been properly attended to.

Keep us all informed please.

£10 to cancer research mate.... No way will a £6000 new BMW bring more money than a £5800 09 KTM 450 EXCR.

No way at all mate

The buyers would be falling over themselves to buy the KTM... You would really have to push the BMW.

I struggled to flog my Jan 09 registered 58 plate 450x for £4650.... and I mean really struggled.

I bought it for £4750 with only 9 hours on it, with nearly £600's worth of extras included... akra, plastics, low seat, new tyres as spares, oil, clutch lever etc etc etc.

I was glad to get shot of it because the dealers have a stack of them left over just waiting to be sold off.

The second hand market will be even worse now that Knighter has amicably agreed to bin his contract with BMW.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the BMW and I think it is a good trail bike, I just wanted shot of it before I lost a stack of cash on it.

Had any interest yet then ???

A brief update on mine, initial view was the piston skirt was scuffed quite badly along with the bore but latest report from BMW via my wife are 'It is in a million bits' ETR is maybe a couple of weeks. It appears to be a warranty job and as ever my local dealer is doing a brilliant job but it does worry me slightly.

So I feel a change of bike coming on :( Even worse is the fact that they leant me an 09 registered R1200R to use until the GX is finished and I was dim enough to take the wife out on the back, and she enjoyed it, and so did I.

BWM dealers are very sneaky like that.....

So it looks like the GX will be swapped out for an R1200R but that still leaves me needing something for the weekends.

450 Husaberg maybe? The problem now is I have ridden 'Bergs and KTM's and neither felt like the GX which is like a mountain goat in comparison.

This brand new bargain is still up for grabs.

Greg
What are they like on the electric starter? I had the 650 and the starter was strictly a 'restarter' mostly used if I stalled it, starting on electric from cold was all but impossible. I have no issues with kickers, even left kickers but the thought of trying to get it started by kickstart 3/4 of the way up a steep muddy slope for the 5th time is downright scary
