G650GS

Some nice pics on here , I'm not 100% sure why, but to me it looks far far better than the F650GS!

For example the exhaust is way more sophisticated, the rack is neater that the F650GS black one, the black "panels" on the side of the tank look better than the sad expanse of painted plastic on the F650GS. ( Notice that the fantastic looking F800GS has black side panels there).
(Also improvements such as the black fork lower legs)

Still waiting for the prices though.

They're not exhausts. It's just one split into a pair, just like the old one. Are you comparing it to the old F650gs or the twin? I think it looks ok and I think it is going to be a better bike than the twin.

It's just the old F650GS (single) re-introduced as a G model

Just the same, new panels, new paint ... otherwise just a parts bin special :nenau

Aye.................

I wish they'd used the G650X chassis/53bhp motor/USD forks/alloy frame and swingarm from the X Range, with 2 models with either 21" Dakar spec or 19" GS spec front spoked wheels and mated to the top of the bike from a F650GS (or the new styling) with a better seat, few extra litres, screen, decent rear shock and some sort of pannier application

It should have been a marriage between the G650X/F650GS...................now that would have been a bike to:drool over

Shame they missed a trick:blast

Got to agree with that. It would have been a 650GS that rivalled the KTM adv out of the box.

US prices announced ...$8700 ie about £5700.....I can see that translating to £6100 in rip-off Britain . Add in the heated grips, ABS and my excitement is waning !

Seen at the NEC

I saw one of the new bikes at the NEC last week. I'm unsure. I don't think it is as well built as the one I have (made in Germany). The one I sat on had heated grips and the right-hand wiring moved around with the throttle. Very poor design. They sides looked like they were just an after-thought. RobA.

£5500 in Rainbow at Rotherham today.

Looks nice in the flesh but I didn't see much interest.

Well you wouldn't ... the falling sales of the old F650GS caused the introduction of the G650 series which were pure quality but too expensive.

The new G650GS is just a re-vamped and re-introduced version of the old :nenau

As JB says, BMW have missed the plot, unless they have something up their corporate sleeve

There is still a model missing from BMW's line up

A 650 (or 800) GS-Adventure or Dakar ;)

Watch this space ......

You're spot on about the G650 quality, managed to get my XCountry out for a first longer run today, although it was actually a bimble round local lanes to start with, I just kept on going for well over a couple of hours.

I used to have a F650, my first "bike" big, and it was fun, but something of a lump with weak front suspension, and it got traded in against the 1150 that I had before my current 1200. The G650 is very different, much lighter, faster steering, and the suspension, even on the XCountry, is really very impressive. It deals with crap surfaces at least as well as my Wilbers equipped 1200, although being much lighter it can be knocked off line more easily.

The engine is impressive too, lots of torque with the Scorpion exhaust, revs nicely, can be a little temperamental moving away, but once it's going it flies. To my eyes it seems well made, even in Chinese form, and a couple of years of abuse at the Offroad School has done nothing more than scratch it, and maybe, just maybe, knacker the clutch, but I'm not yet sure about that. It seems exceedingly frugal with the fuel, thought it was due a drink but only managed to get a fiver in, it must do a good few miles to the gallon, just as well with a small tank.

It might have been expensive to make, but I think BMW should have carried on with it, it's a very capable bike. Shame there is so little blingundfarkle for it, although that will enhance my bank balance somewhat. Seat is a plank, the one thing I would change if I could, and maybe a windscreen, although I'm not too sure about that either.

Got a price today from Jacksons in Jersey and with ABS, Heated Grips and a center stand it was £5397.

I think it will be perfect for the Misses.

New G650GS!

Mrs P has just bought a new 'entry level' G650GS/FL with ABS and heated grips and i'm sure she'll enjoy reading some of your posts 'ripping the sh*t' out of her new bike.......!

One of the main features of this bike is the seat height. If you're only five feet tall there there isn't another GS that you can ride or one that costs around £4995.......!

Mrs P would dearly love to ride one of you 'big boys' big bikes but but in reality it isn't going to happen unless she can get a leg transplant........:D

Sure it's cheap and some of the bits are Chinese but so what, it's a GS and it's a proven design and it didn't cost £15k. The Touratech Zega panniers, topbox and handguards will swap straight on to new bike aswell making a huge saving in accessories.

Mrs P's first impression of the new bike is that it's much lighter or less bulky in that the front fairing panels, instruments and screen are a good bit lower than on her previous F650GS/FL

For confidence when riding what is basically a 200kg bike this alone can make a huge difference especially when she is riding on Scandanavian or Icelandic gravel roads........!

It's a basic bike at a very basic price and i'm sure the 'wee' GS is going to be a far better alternative than say a Yamaha Virago.....:ymca

Skygod went to Southport yesterday to see the new 650 and the massive 6 cyl K
The 650 with a spec like yours was £6k+ so well done on the price

Steve

Cheers Steve. worth knowing.

We have decided on no ABS and to have the factory lowering kit. £4704:thumb2

Can someone explain the differences between this and the previous model that was around about 3 years ago - aside of course from the very pretty cosmetics.

My dealer said there are no other differences. Is he right?

Cosmetics apart ... smaller fuel tank, less power, probably a smooother engine :augie

Just a rebadged parts bin special in real terms, looking a little prettier in its new clothes though :nenau

Yup just the old f650 with a bit of botox injected, Proves one thing tho, if it ain't broke don't fix it :D

I can see that chain guard making it's way onto the dakar along with the indicators if they'll fit, the oil return line would also be a welcome upgrade for people, to late for me now tho :blast I've already changed over to a braided stainless hose having had the dreaded waterpump failure a while ago.

looks like it's had an upgrade in the controls, the indicator switches appear to be the same as fitted to the boxers. Other than that the only major difference between the 'old' 650 and this one would be the engine. Looks to be the same design tho, I would like the side covers as being able to get at the clutch without having to drain the coolant would be nice, not that i've needed to yet.

What they should have done was made a better dakar, ditch the cat exhaust for a single sided system, stick some usd forks on the front, jack the whole thing up an inch and call it good.

Something like this :augie

Not an exuse to post a picture at all :D.

One happy lady

Just a note to say PhysioJo of this parish, picked up her red and black G650 today. The attached pictures tell all the story that is needed.

Her comment: " this is MY bike" nuff said:thumb2

So I am very popular now.:hug

The bike is so similar to her old single pot 650 that we were almost able to fit the panniers off her old bike on to the new one. The top box fits as well.

Jo had bar risers to provide a better reach for her, butthe brake cable is too short.

Wind protection and comfort are better than on the older model. The dash is infinitely better. The sixth gear is good and there might be better acceleration. Too early to tell.

:eek You sure on that 6th gear? Bmw states it as having only 5, if there is a 6th i may have to get the spanners out as i'm constantly trying to shift up from 5th on the dakar :blast

Also just noticed that the new 650 takes a 110/80 r19 front and a 140/80 r17 rear tire, the old 650 takes a 100/90 r19 and a 130/80 r17. More road oriented?
