Garages in Aberdeen

It has been ages since my 1996 1100GS was inside a garage as I normally do all work myself...but I want to fit steel braided brake hoses and I am SCARED of all those bleed nipples under the tank, so who can I trust around Aberdeen these days to do it?

Bob Balantyne is permanently busy, Shirlaws don't work on BMWs any more, John Clark are too expensive and H&S are great for MOTs but not sure about this job...Thanks in advance.

That's the thing, I do have ABS so the pipework is more kinky than a politician! I think I know my mechanicing limits so I want to pass this particular job on to someone more experienced... Thanks.

Ronno has highly recomended Dave Roberts who in Ronnos words "works out of his (impressive) workshop/garage at his home in Stanley near Perth". It is quite a way to go but Aberdeen is very short of reliable garages.

Isn't the flush and bleed routine of the servo system quite complex requiring a special set up connected to the sensors!! BMW aren't cheap but this maybe worth the extra if the above is true (but again it may be an urban legend).

Bob Ballantyne works out of his own workshop (a bit like Dave Roberts, by the sound of it), has a great reputation as he does things at his own pace and for the love of it - apparently most of the traffic cops use him for their own machines. Consequently he's mad busy all the time! I've used him before, top bloke, and against the odds when I just phoned him he can slot me in! Woo hoo! Yes, i would say Jim Hay or Dennis Irvine.

Bob Ballantyne is very good and will go the extra mile to do his best but he's sometimes a grumpy old sod and because he very nearly takes a lifetime over swapping a bulb, he's very very rarely available.

If you like growing a very long beard and having enough time to change wifes several times - bobs yer man.

If you like being ripped off, lied to, decieved and want to be unsure if the work has even been completed - Shirlaws is the place for you.

For what its worth we put all our bikes for servicing and repair to Dennis and he's very good and very affordable.

All good advice.
Actually, replacing the brake lines is fairly straightforward - I did the job recently on my 1100 (with ABS). No servos but I think they were only an option on 1150's.

I've replaced lines on several bikes over the years - now its the sort of job I wouldn't trust anyone else to do.

If you are stuck - and can get to Inverness - I can take you through the swap over.

It really is a pretty straight forward job to do yourself. Spend the money you save on eezi bleed nipples which make the job of bleeding the system a lot easier. Make sure you reassemble in clean conditions then be patient in pumping the new fluid through and you should be OK.

The ABS reservoir is no big deal either, it's just a question of bleeding the same as other parts of the system. You may need to tie up the front brake lever overnight to let the final bits of air out of the system.
