I have been thinking about getting a GPS for the bike and the car, but have held off trying to justify the price.

However I am off to Canada to see some friends at Easter and have been checking out websites over there for prices. Best price so far found in Toronto, where we are going, is £372, which is kind of talking me into buying one.

The base unit comes with America's Autoroute Basemap and the mapsource cd for north America.

Understandably I can buy a copy of the European Mapsource, but can I get a copy of the Autoroute basemap information for Europe and does anyone know if I can load this on, or is it something that is permanently loaded.

Anyone know the answer?

Cheers

No, you cannot change the basemap.

You need to factor in the cost of City Navigator Europe.

If you need the GPS to navigate in Canada, buy one, but when you get back to the UK you will need European mapping ie City Navigator or City Select.

City Navigator is very very Expensive (if you can get it), City Select is only very expensive.

Alternatives maybe;

Buy the Canadian 2610 and talk someone in to selling you there unused second unlock of the above European software.

Buy a Garmin GPS18 laptop kit with European City Select, use its second unlock for your 2610 and sell the GPS18 on eBay (true, for a loss, but you share the software).

I’m sure others will have there own ideas…

I boughtmy Ique3600 in florida and it came with the us software.
I also ordered a european set while I was there. But the basemap that came with mine was on the installation disc and had several options. I use the worldwide base map, and can change it to americas etc if I want. World basemap only takes up 32mb on my sd card so I use that.
All major roads and cities covered in most parts of the mapped world.
