Garmin 2610...

I'm trying to find a Garmin 2610, but as they are no longer in production, it looks like i'm restricted to buying second hand, maybe ebay

so what should i look out for when buying? (apart from the bike kit)?

Heard few guys mention that they didn't have much memory in them, can this be up graded??

Make sure that it has a European basemap (unless you know what you're doing with a US basemap model).

Make sure that the vendor will facilitate getting the unit registered with Garmin in your name (for mapping updates).

Current mapset of City Navigator v.9. They release an update about every year.

You'll need all the stuff that came out of the box:

• MapSource disk
• City Navigator disk
• Mains lead
• Cigarette lighter lead-cum-speaker
• CF card
• Beanbag
• etc etc

Consider that new units were selling for about £250(?) recently. Price accordingly.

As well as the 2610 unit itself you will want:

12V power adapter for car with integral speaker
a memory card (standard is 256Mb but a 2Gb is very handy)
mains adapter
PC software - the later 2610s were shipped with Mapsource v8 with a free upgrade to v9 - these need an unlock code otherwise they are useless.
USB cable (although this is a standard, generic item so not expensive to source)
Beanbag dash mount

Nice to have the bike kit of:
Power cable to attach to a bike
Cradle
RAM mount or similar
Carry case

Also nice to have:
CF card reader to plug into USB socket as it hastens data transfer - can be bought for little money from ebuyer or the like

Memory: the internal memory does not have an upgrade path. It holds waypoints, routes and tracks. Mapping data is held on a separate CF card. As stated, the standard size is 256Mb. However, using a 2Gb card allows you to have the whole of Europe at your disposal. These cards are generic items available from many sources. A 2Gb card is under £20 if you go for a "random Korean brand". The slower the card the better IMV, as the 2610 is mature technology, so the latest fast cards (designed for hi-res cameras) are no advantage.

Couple of other tips -
1. Make sure you get a receipt from the (presumably Garmin registered) seller. it'll make it a bit easier when you try to register yourself and the unit on the Garmin site.
2. Make sure you get the appropriate Mapsource CD (v8 or v9 preferably) AND THE UNLOCK CODES!

It's a great unit.

In December, I bought mine for £180 and they included a bike mount and lead for free
