Dragged me old Garmin GPS 5 out of the cupboard today charged up the batterys loaded a route and set of, but the bugger couldnt acquiring satellites. Came home and tried it with the external antenna fitted to the car, same result didnt acquiring satellites :nenau
Anyone got any ideas wtf wrong with it ?

its fecked

could be the internal battery has run down, losing all the data, how long has it been in the cupboard?

back to garmin if it has :mmmm

Only to be used as a last resort in case your GPS V is locked up or not functioning properly and you cannot start it normally. I
n doing this you will erase ALL data - routes - waypoints and everything else previously saved in the unit . You need to take the unit outside and allow it to relocate after performing this reset.

Press and Hold the following buttons in the following order. You must end up with all three buttons held in simultaneously - once the unit kicks into life release all three.

1) ZOOM OUT
2) QUIT
3) ON

It's your last hope before calling in the Garmin tech support. All you are doing by doing this is like rebooting your PC - nothing more serious but it does help clear any blocks in the unit.

Let us know how you get on.

I bet you just didn't give it enough time and driving around not giving it constant reception isn't making things easier for the unit either. You've had it locked up to long for it to remember the useful stuff (almanac data) it needs to aquire reception fast.

To speed things up you should start by pushing the Menu button when on the satellite page. Choose "New location" from the menu, then choose "Use map" and tell the unit where you are. Next you put it where has as much clear view of the sky as possible and let it receive satellite data for a while. Normally it would get fix within one minute but if reception is in any way obstructed (being next to a building, under trees...) it can be significantly worse so just leave it for 15-30 minutes.

If that doesn't help try Geckos master reset but make sure that you back up any important data from the GPS to your computer first if necessary. Then try the things I described above once more.

If that doesn't succed it's time to call Garmin service but I'm pretty sure you will bring it back to life yourself.

Fixed it !

Cheers for the feedback guys. Tried PPR's idea of sitting it stationary for a time in the open to see if it would aquire (i.e. bottom of the back garden) Went to check it 15 minutes later and it had the could not aquire message with the options to use indoors or keep trying to aquire. But this time I noticed the option 'stored without batteries' :eek something I hadnt noticed whilst it I was riding along. tried that ten minutes later and it had aquired full coverage :thumb
